250+mph top speed, 200kWh battery pack, 620 miles range, 1.9 0-60mph time, 8.9 second 1/4 mile. "These numbers sound unreal but they're not" says Musk.
0-100mph in 4.2sec. $200k, $50k deposit, $250k for founders model--whatever that is. Slated for 2020? 4 seats. Single wiper? Plenty of luggage room.

Amazing. Wonder if it has a carbon tub. Not clear how much it weighs and if it can do much more than go in a straight line, or manage to finish a lap at a track without the batteries overheating, but still, stunning numbers.

His semi truck does 0-60 in 5sec and manages to have center seating position ala F1:

New Tesla Roadster. Unreal numbers

Thanks to Dragtimes for the live video. The figures on this car stagger the mind. I don't even understand how they did it/will do it.

Obviously, this car is geared. It must also be one seriously light, huge power car that somehow can keep traction.

I don't think it will come close to the latest cars on the track by the time it releases, but that's some untouchable acceleration.

Maybe only Project One can get close to that, and this thing apparently will have higher top end?!?!?

Just a generic 1/4 mile calculator suggests 1100 hp and 3400 lb weight with perfect traction. The calculator suggests a Project One at 2900 lb and 950 hp would be at just about the same exact 1/4 mile time. Of course the Tesla would have less drag due to the design philosophy.

If by reflecting you mean soiling themselves, we’re in agreement. :D

McLaren did say they plan an all electric car, and I imagine this should turn up the heat to accelerate plans for release. I don’t remember the last time the auto industry was in so much flux and so interesting to watch!

Is this the company whose recent earnings (losses) were about 30% worse than forecast, that in the last few months has gone through $1b of cash, that is reportedly having severe production problems, and that has recently fired so many employees that the UAW have filed a formal complaint against it?
I want to buy automobiles design by car guys, not by computer geeks. Any company that proposes to stick this atrocity on the end of a steering column deserves to go out of business, the sooner the better:

Unless they have a new tyre available, I don't see how any existing road tyre is capable of getting a car from 0-60 below 2 seconds. And the rather more important thing is how it goes around corners. Oh or how the batter cooling is going to work under track use such that the battery doesn't cook itself after a lap.....

So instead they showed it THREE YEARS before you could possibly take deliver! And seeing the way Tesla has been going lately it's probably more like 4-5 years before customers actually get their vehicles. I'd much rather see teases for a few weeks and then get the car a year later than see teases for 3 years and then get the car a year after I was supposed to. Ford GT has a similar problem.

I placed the deposit for the Founder Series.

Have 10 days to pay in full - hoping to learn before then.

2-3M hyper cars received a donkey kick in the nuts it's less than the sales tax.

We all know this is where things are heading Musk simply did it first - the 918 will probably have a battery swap as will others but they certainly aren't 250k all in.

Insane numbers for sure.

Remember no one is actually seeing this thing on the road, or independently verifying these claims until 2020 at least.

I don't mean to be cynical, and as much as i'm on old school dead-dinosaur burning motor kind of guy, the world does need characters like Musk who push the boundaries. Let's hope he's successful, because much as the Nissan GTR raised Ferrari's and Porsche's game 10 years ago, and the 720S is likely to do the same to Lambo and Ferrari now, if the Tesla comes close to its claimed numbers in the real world, and isn't just a one trick straight line pony, then everyone else will have to up their game yet again.

We win.

People at the show observed they were cup2s. Wether they were vanilla or some special variant remains to be seen.

That said I don’t think it needs something special.

Fact is that the hardest break traction part of acceleration usually happens at the very start, and you don’t have the software/torque to keep pushing at that same crazy level all the way through for many cars. I can see much finer torque and control happening at all 4 tires here. But the tires probably need to provide over 1.3G of straight on grip, sustained. I think that is in the realm of doable for awd and the cup2s. It may boil down to much finer traction control sensors and software.

Sorry but looks generic like the NSX, numbers sound great but that company bleeds money like Niagara falls and government help will soon run out, this is a sinking ship that no one seems to notice just like the Titanic.

To many optimist bet on EM, no thank you.

Yea, I hear his rockets will never fly either. And who does he think he is thinking he can make a rocket that’s reusable and can land (on a tiny moving barge in the ocean no less), when all the major governments on earth failed to do so for more than half a century.

Right, this sounds like the kind of guy you definitely want to bet against, for sure.

Actually I missed this amongst all the various bits.

From the Financial Times...

"The company has already begun to take reservations for the new Roadster, which will cost $200,000 when it is released in at least three years’ time. Prospective buyers must pay a $45,000 deposit, but the first 1,000 produced will be a limited-edition “Founders Series” costing $250,000 upfront."

Nice cash injection for free there....

Bub Lutz was out today throwing a bunch of shade on tesla. He basically doesn't think they have sound financial footing or plan and that all the other (major) global manufactures will come out with their own electric vehicles in the next few years that will be better performing, on time and higher quality. We'll see...

#60 ·
GM is right - they have their factories producing cars no one wants in a few years others will have better performing higher quality.

We all knew this day would come - no one ever expected a 1.9 250 mph 600 mile range car in 2020 would be introduced yesterday and almost sold out today off an online sign up.

well there goes my plans for getting a 720s !!! This car is unreal....the people in ferrari chat are complaining about it sounding like a vacuum cleaner......never mind the fact that they complained that turbos sounded like vacuum cleaners 3 years back when all they could look at was the 458.....now not a peep about the 488 and turbo sound !

One thing I'd say for Tesla that everyone here hasn't seemed to mention yet. The roadster is imo a bit of a joke at the moment in my opinion, chucking a lot of batteries into a generic looking sports car that goes fast in a straight line with a big touchscreen does nothing for me whatsoever.

However, I like the truck idea. That is the future due to forthcoming government regulation in cities. but that's again in line with what Tesla vehicles to me represent. Transport not driving.

But that's the way the world is moving as well whether EV or ICE I suppose. Tesla might be ahead of the curve there as well but just not in impementation anyway.
