The Corvette ZR1 is finally official. Chevrolet announced on Wednesday plans to reveal the most extreme mid-engine Corvette yet this summer, publishing a short teaser video showing us the car's silhouette.

Chevy has yet to release any specs for the ZR1, but rumors suggest it could get a twin-turbocharged version of the 5.5-liter naturally aspirated, flat-plane crank V-8 found in the current Z06. Other rumors suggest the ZR1 could also get the electric front drive axle from the E-Ray, making the ZR1 an all-wheel drive affair for the first time.

The ZR1 has sat atop the Corvette food-chain for three straight generations, so no matter which drivetrain it ends up with, expect big power. The last ZR1 made 755 horsepower; we expect this one to make more than that, around 800 horses, if rumors are to be believed. Performance is hard to predict without concrete power numbers and drivetrain info, but it's safe to say we're looking at a 0-60 time in the low two-second range.

Like the last ZR1, this new mid-engine model is expected to take aero to the extreme. It'll go one step further than the already aero-heavy Z06, likely with a bigger wing and splitter paired with scoops, canards, and more. Our spy photographers captured the car testing at the Nürburgring last year, giving us a good idea of what to expect. This thing will be a pure-bred track machine.

The ZR1 will also be the most expensive C8 yet, sitting above the base Stingray, E-Ray, and Z06. Chevy has yet to release pricing, but we expect the ZR1 to be priced around $150,000.

The new Z06 is 3,721 lb / 1,688 kg DIN. Add twin turbos, more aero (fixed or active? active will add weight) & maybe even electric motors with AWD? The ZR1 could possibly make the 3,965 lb / 1,798 kg E-Ray Coupe look light! I will guess that the new Z06 will weigh close to the new Ford GTD. They are both being released close to the same time. Manufacturers no longer care about weight.

Lotus don't. That bloody SUV of theirs 2.5 tonnes plus.

Slightly off topic to be honest in a way although Johnny's run at KSC was very obviously a heavily modified car. He effectively did 0-500-0km/h. I'm not that bothered much now as I once was.

It changed stuff for us because I think Bugatti were right to pull the plug at 304.773MPH.

Anyway two tonne circa 4WD mid engined hybrid Corvette with twin turbochargers? It's all gone to hell! (Zora)

The Z06 is nice but the ZR1 will be the one to own. The two problems with the Z06 are fuel economy and transmission. The fuel economy is downright AWFUL. There's a torque hole in the Z06 that is difficult to overcome. It's somewhat of a design flaw. For example I was on the long back straight at VIR and I couldn't get out of 5th gear (or maybe it was 6th - it was several months ago that I ran it there). The fastest I could go was around 155 mph because that gear was too tall for the limited torque of the Z06 to overcome it. A McLaren, Ferrari, even my C7 ZR1, is easily doing well over 175 on that straight. I've hit 185 safely on that section. I suspect they designed the transmission with the ZR1 in mind where the turbos could get you to redline and into the next gear but the Z06 couldn't do it.

The Car and Driver Lightning laps doesn't use the Grand Course which doesn't feature the full version of that straight but normal people rarely get to drive the Grand Course. The Full Course uses the entire back straight which is where this design flaw appears. That said the Z06 is still an amazing car. Everywhere else on VIR it was absolutely delightful to drive but that one back straight showed off that very strange design flaw. It's also amazing to drive on twisty mountain roads. But if you want to go really fast on track the ZR1 will be the car to own and, thanks to the turbos, will probably give you much better fuel economy as well.

Beware of the build quality.
My C8 3LT Z51 i sold after after a few months of ownership.
The carpet separated/cut sort at factory and was offset.
The warranty fixes required would take 9-10 months for the dealer to fix.
Crap on that nonsense.
Got rid of it a few weeks ago.

Not to mention the car was delivered with the 2nd roof panel with two chips as it was not secured properly in the trunk.
Crap!
Chevy never again!

Well, take a 2nd detailed look.
The carpet issue revealed itself after about 2 months of purchase.
I reviewed the day of purchase photos and somehow they managed to press the carpet in so one could not see the issue. The carpet was cut way too short near the center panel and popped out.
I gave Chevy a shot, but it did not turn out well.
I had high hopes, but as mentioned never again.

Though it would never happen with any other brand I have owned (Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, VW, Ford, and Scion), if any issue were to arise they would have it remedied within a week. In order of speediness.

Assessment:
Chevy Cars: Crap
Chevy Service/Customer support: Crap

Well, point-counterpoint. And I’m not a Chevy guy. I don’t own any besides the Z06. And wouldn’t. But I am a detail guy. I’m critical of all these cars up close. Z06, is in my view, easily best bang for the buck performance car ever made. I’m astonished I like it more than my 458 speciale considering the values of those. And it sounds better.

I recently sold my 812 GTS but before I did I looked at a few. Mis aligned hoods. Leather issues. Non of these cars are perfect. All examples can have issues.

as far as service, I guess dealer specific. I have a great relationship with my dealer. I’ve known my salesman since I was a teenager. They take great care of me. So I have no complaints. Sorry that wasn’t your experience.

I agree with your assessment in both the performance and such.
My c8 3lt z51 was a little different.
I enjoyed the performance and the handling and the power was good.

How are you liking the F8? I'm good friends with a decorated GT driver who later became a ferrari team driver and brand ambassador for them, he sold his pista and bought a Z06, I have driven it, in no way do I think it's a crappy product. It's a great car that punches well above its' weight class
