That’s very bold …. Probably 20 people reported to mclaren that you’re flipping the car.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Not saying this is the case here, but what happens if someone buys a high dollar car like this, and then something happens where they just cannot afford it anymore? Would that still be an issue for McLaren? And if so, would all those people still report them to McLaren?

@unmac I'm not flipping the car. Had it for 8 months, put 2200 miles on it. Not to mention I've made 30 videos with the car and have to talked to at least 50 people who bought a McLaren because of me and my ownership.

If I would have sold it for $800K in the beginning, that would've been a flip. I'll be lucky if I get $100K over sticker which would be breaking even given taxes, interest payments, ETC.

Car looks great, I parked next to you in the light green 720 two weeks ago at Dania.

I had a very long discussion with mclaren many months ago about a variety of things (mainly about p1 replacement ). A big part of that discussion was people selling 765 spiders before one year , the implications to dealers , implications to the person selling . They actively monitor the selling of these cars , they are fairly diligent in finding the cars that are being flipped and actively encourage people to report cars that were flipped (in case they miss any of them (I threw out the 20 number because the rep said that they get many v.m., text, emails from people ). They don’t care who you are , how many cars you bought . You will be banned or shadow banned and not even know about it (there’s a few people on these forums who are shadow banned and don’t even know about it ).

modifying - you should be very clear in the description of the car that it is modified . You don’t want someone doing a ppi on it after the auction and they get informed that it can’t be cpo’d and that it is flagged or will be flagged . Someone can do a u turn on the sale because of this .

lastly - many of us could have made this money at the beginning on the car but we understand the implications of selling the car before 12 months (and there would have been implications for me and I’ve bought 13 mclarens ).

So what you are saying is that if someone buys a car, then falls on hard times and have to sell, they still are then banned from buying limited editions forever? McLaren (and others reporting the sales) know the finances of everyone selling a car?

@unmac. A bunch of good points... Let's go one by one.

Regarding your first point. I understand the risk of selling it and am OK with them "shadow banning" me if they do. It's not my preference as I love the cars and the brand, but I have to get out of the car to use the money for something more pressing.

Secondly, McLaren doesn't make you sign an agreement when you buy it. I wish they did so that there would a more structured way to deal with this situation... IE if the car is worth $X over sticker, the dealer will cover the taxes and fees when trading the car in.

I mentioned that I was going to sell the car to the dealer, and they offered me sticker. They wouldn't even cover the taxes and fees... I was willing to take a big haircut with them on the car to keep everything good with the brand...

Regarding the modification, couldn't have been more clear. It has a link to the exhaust haha and it says it clearly in the description. That being said, my car has not been flagged. I know this for a fact.

That's amazing that you've had 13 McLaren's. This probably means that the implications for you are much greater than those for me. I'm not likely to get a P2 anyways so I don't know about how much this move affects me. Maybe I won't be able to get the new LT Spider... That sucks, but I think I can live with that given that I don't have a better way out.

Life happens and money crunches happen- especially for entrepreneurs who dont get a regular paycheck and whose income varies.

I sort of fall into that category where my income varies widely depending on how well work is going. This is also the reason that for me I aways just pay cash for my toys. If hard times come- im not in a bind. I can take my time and liquidate my toy if needed and the monthly payments arent a burden.

Selling a limited edition car is always going to raise eyebrows. I have no clue what Mclaren corporate is going to do in this case but if I was wanting to sell- id sell it back to my dealer if it had not been so long since I got the car.

Curious what the dealer has to say about this.

How does tying up cash in an asset help over having the cash on hand help in a bind?

The car is dope. I bit bold for me with the green but I like it a lot.

for @unmac are you saying after a year you're no longer monitored? Are you ever allowed to sell a car anymore that doesn't go back to your dealer without car manufacturers being upset over it? I think it's ridiculous.
different types for different types of car …..

general things ; dealers aren’t allowed to advertise used cars for re-sale until they are six months old from new .

right of first refusal At the lower of cost or Msrp for the first 12 months for in demand cars

Mutually agreed upon lien on the car for 12 months that restricts re-sale without permission of manufacture or dealer .

agreement to sell back to dealer before going on open market .

flippers make the dealers look bad in that they didn’t k be on their customers good enough and gave it to the wrong customers .

As previously stated ; Dealers are incurring penalties and lost trust from manufactures of who they gave the cars to. Custodies canceling themselves if they sell within a year (even if it is thriving their dealer )… it doesn’t matter who you are and how valuable you have been in the past …

What I’ve written iin this thread has been thoroughly discussed with owners by their dealers and I’ve discussed it with many other owners /dealers/manufactures.

the banning and shadow banning is a very real thing. All manufactures and dealers have a banned list of customers or a restriction to customers based on past behavior .

I saw your ad on BaT. It will be interesting to see how high the bidding gets. The last 2 765 Coupes on BaT sold at about $80k over MSRP. I suspect the market is declining, but you never know.

I had spoken to McLaren Corporate about people flipping their 765 LT Spiders when I my allocation didn't come through. They do understand if you have pressing circumstances and need to sell the car and they won't ban you in the future. They do prefer you to sell your car through a dealer, however, and that usually buys good will. You should make sure they understand your circumstances when selling the car to prevent future banning.

Aftermarket downpipes will void a warranty claim for any powertrain-related issue. Search some of my old posts to read about my fiasco with high-flow downpipes.

What is "shadow banning" and what is the purpose of that?

When I placed my deposit for a 765LT Spider, my dealer did say that it had to be "approved" by McLaren Corporate and they wanted a list of my McLaren history. My deposit was approved but my dealer selected another client to get my allocation... So, I moved the deposit to the yet unannounced 720 replacement. Oh well.. First World Problems.

You also just buy a gt3 rs and have more sport cars than one needs, so its rather not a financial thing.
i wouldnt play with the car guarantee, wouldnt change a magnificient car technically. I also would only sell to the original dealer, if i had to. But its your life and you live in a free country.

I personally don’t read too much into bat sales as an indicator of market values . Too much pump and dump sales that really aren’t sales .

so many re-sellers buying cars on bat and then re-posting a few months later with higher values (mainly wholesale values in bat ). I’ve seen a few Senna’s bought by re-sellers that were then listed for a couple of hundred thousand more .

biggest people getting screwed are the ones that bought into the carrera gt sales . A lot of pumping up and a few people took the bite . Hardly any of them meeting the reserve on later listings

it’s a good forum for people to make public sales to set price for other inventory that they have hidden in the retail space.

mclaren owners and mclaren re-sellers haven’t really played that game yet .

I’ll have my 765 until my 296 comes in at a minimum. So 2024. I’ll buy an extended warranty at that point. It’s the best machine for excitement and speed I’ve ever had, easily. Not sure it’s the best car, as that’s a more wholistic discussion. But my hope is that by then interest rates have come down and the market for them is strong. If the market is terrible, I’ll keep the car. Not going to sell something I love at a loss.

From reading comments on BringATrailer, looks like the sale didn't go through because of issues found on due diligence after the auction. Something was mentioned about possibly warranty issues (likely due to the aftermarket downpipe installation). Looks like the sale was cancelled and it is now listed for sale at $699k. List prices for 765LT Spiders are absurdly astronomical. I wonder what the real SALES prices are (if any have been sold on the secondary market). I only see the same cars sitting and sitting... unsold.
