Renew Warranty?

I have a 2019 600LT. I bought it with 3300 miles 9 months ago, I'm closing in on 5,000.

At what point does renewing the warranty become an exercise is throwing money away? I've had one this year and didn't use it. It expires in December and was wondering why I should renew. I understand things can break, but after owing the car for 9 months I feel pretty comfortable with the brand. It doesn't seem as fragile as I thought coming into it. How long do people keep warranties for?

I had a claim that was probably close to that on the 570, although it was two things. The rear main seal was leaking and they replaced all eight control arms because the bushings were worn. I think it was $15k to the warranty, but would have been more out of pocket. The other thing that springs to mind is the V module, which is a common failure and probably runs $5k at the dealer.

It’s all cost benefit and just a math equation. I was quoted 10k a year from McLaren for an extra year of warranty…zero chance I would pay that. 10k goes pretty far at an independent shop. McLaren does not “fix” anything, they replace assemblies. Find an independent shop that you trust or ship it to one that someone else does. Two years of warranty is just about a rebuilt gearbox.

As of July this year, warranty for a 600LT up to 4 years old was $4500 and for cars over 4 years old $5500. A discount was offered to buy two years upfront - plus if you renew 2 years before the car hits 5 years old, you pay the lower (up to 4 years) cost for 2 years. I think I saved $2.5k or so by taking 2 years vs one year at a time.

For piece of mind get the warranty not only will it cover you ..the diagnostics are included free ( well here they are )
If renewed before 4 years it’s cheaper so get 2 years then it raises slightly
I paid £5k for 2 years I’ve had door button go air con pipe damper and now a big one the switch pack that £3.6k to replace the damper and air con pipe was £2.5k so I’ve still got over a year left and had my money back already .
At each service the car is fully health checked and anything that they spot will then get fixed under warranty.
As long as I keep the car I’m keeping the warranty. You can tranfer it to new keeper if more than 3 months left for a small fee

Diagnostics aren't covered here. This discovery is making me lean towards not renewing or going third party.

You never know: My 12C ran perfect until it didn't -- white smoke, cracked head, etc. Appr. 25,000 miles at the time. Decided not to renew warranty appr. 1 yr. earlier. $70,000. (other things done, like 'track pack cooling')

My 570 ran perfect until it didn't -- failed DLD, and resultant starter motor failure. Appr. 12,000 miles at the time. Had decided not to renew warranty just couple of months earlier. $14,000.

But now, with appr. 8 yrs. of ownership, I'd be out nearly $60k anyway, just in cost of insurance!
And for last nearly 2 yrs., McL will not warranty my 2012 12C, just b/c of age (no other reason, car is perfect!)

I'm just too suspicious and leery of third party insurers, so going rogue at this time.

Very interesting. My 12C ran perfect until I changed dealers. Tough to know cause and effect. They let me keep renewing, I guess I was in year 11 or so when I sold (and got refund on the unused time for the warranty back).

I guess I must have bought 9 years worth of warranty. And it covered a bunch of things over the years, of course the big one being at the very end, a full new engine (that they built new and took months to get). I guess I probably roughly broke even on the warranty work more or less.

I'm new to this world and my 12c was not CPO when I got it. It was purchased through an individual back in January of this year.

I decided to go forward with Autrella. I can tell you from my single experience, Autrella felt very different then all of the other 3rd party warranties I looked into. Most of those warranty companies were simply interested in your cash and closing the deal without any knowledge of the car. It felt generic and did not give me any piece of mind. They didn't require any type of inspection, PPI, pictures, info etc.

I felt like those companies would decline anything and everything.

Autrella was significantly more professional. I was able to speak to the same representative every time. He communicated through email and phone. I got an extensive PPI from my local super car mechanic who then spoke over the phone to the Autrella representative and his supervisor. The full PPI report including pictures was also sent via email to provide evidence the car was in good working order prior to approving my extended warranty.

All in all, I was very pleased with my experience, and I would be happy to provide the name and email of the person I worked with at Autrella. I also had assistance from another member on here getting hooked up with the person I used.

I have not had to use the warranty yet, so I cannot tell you how claims are handled. There are a few of us who have used Autrella and so far the feedback has been good.

I spent 10K for 3 years. If I keep the car beyond that I will probably renew it. The warranty is also transferable to a new owner if I sell the car, or I can transfer it to a different car pending PPI on the next car.

I do not work for Autrella and do not make any money from this post. Just wanted to throw that out there.

It really is a personal decision; there is no one-size-fits-all answer. I drove my 12C for 9 years and 32K miles, with no extended warranty. At $5K/year it just seemed outrageous, so I decided to self-insure. It ended up being the right decision because nothing failed after the initial mfg. warranty period. But the difficulty and expense in getting McLaren service is also why I replaced the 12C with a new R8 RWD last month. It's not as stiff as the 12C, but otherwise the experience is pretty similar, at least for my use case.

Agreed that they're not fragile. If you're concerned about a catastrophe - then buy the warranty. But at some point spending $5k/yr adds up quickly if that catastrophe never happens. I don't know- I tend to own my cars for a long time and the warranty prices will add another $50k+ to my ownership. I don't think it's that much of a risk not to have it.

So far, in three years of ownership, having a warranty has saved me roughly a net $10k, maybe a little more and a lot more if I don't include the hidden CPO fee, while also providing insurance against a catastrophe. The cars aren't fragile, but they are extremely expensive to repair. I've actually paid once for the warranty, $9300 for two years, but between the two cars I've probably had $30k in repairs.

Cost Depends on who fixes it. I have not had to have my Mclaren serviced for anything yet but my Gallardo cost me a little less than $5k for my clutch at the Indy 2 years back-the dealership quoted me $15.5k for that same job. My Mac is out of warranty now. I do my own oil, brakes, minor stuff and ill go back to that same Indy if/when something does come up. The local dealer quoted me $7k for a 1 year warranty. Ill take the gamble that I do not spend $7k this year or next. I also have the benefit of no car payments (I wont buy a toy unless I am purchasing it outright).
