I think Jalopnik got that wrong, 650S is a 12c dialed up to 11 much like the 458 Speciale is a 458 dialed to 11... Earlier articles on P15 stated it was a few years out.

As a disclaimer though, I'm not going on any insider info, just my own speculation on the stuff I've read, so no way of knowing if I'm right or not until, I'm guessing, Geneva!

If C stands for Conventional, I'm out. :)

Also, if this car is only 6kg lighter than a Conventional 12C, it is NOT a 458speciale rival.

Any of you that seem to have breakfast with Ron weekly care to lob a guess on curb weight? Or will that violate your signed NDA too... :p

I'm really hoping this is a true GT3/Speciale competitor. Cut that weight by 100 kg please. It's place in the market wouldn't make sense if it wasn't. It would be competing directly with its brother in the market

I don't see big track gain ever coming on the MP4.

If someone really wants a track car why not buy a track car - it's a lot safer and taking a road car to a track once a driver gets good is IMO ... not a good idea.

Either way it's very exciting times for the brand. Really keen to see the styling on this 650S.

2 P11's: 12C, 650S... Coupe or Spider is just a change of the roof, no difference other than that, so exists for both I am sure...

Interesting though that they call it McLaren 650S, as if its not a 12C... kinda confusing again.. but maybe its also because "McLaren 12C 650S" would just to be too much :)

Rumors, rumors, ideas... fun times.. :)
Or if they went with the original name then it would be a McLaren MP4-12C 650S.:D:D

Fun times indeed!

He may have but it didn't calm him down when someone parked a Ferrari by his office window...;)
No idea how the Ferrari got in considering I had to leave my Mac in the public carpark  ( it did have security on mind you ;)

I think the best way to think of it is that there will be three versions of 'P11'; 12c Coupe, 12c Spider, 650S.... P15 should be something totally separate that won't break cover for a few years.

-Jamie.
Not really. Production of 12C Coupé and Spider has ended. Only P1 and 650S Coupé and Spider in production.

I'm not sure why that would be stated when the press release clearly says:

"It takes learnings from both the 12C as well as the sell-out McLaren P1™ and will be positioned between the two on McLaren Automotive’s supercar grid."

That doesn't sound like the end of the 12C... correct me if i'm wrong

True! Now only 650s and spider under production. First cars arriving to dealer end of feb. In my opinion unfortunately the "new car" and new name 650s gimmick is just a way to make a facelift after 2 years without having all current owners and the press too disappointed. I cant help it, im disappointed, resale will take another hit, after 10 months of ownership, and a lot of money paid to get car brand new, even though i still love the car but really sad that in less than a month my car will be the old mp4-12 :(
Im no ferrari fan, but i admit that one of the nicest thing with them is that they make a model that remains untouched for at least 5 years, so when i pay over a quarter million for a car i have 5 years to enjoy it without worrying about facelift and model change...

I think that is a reasonable stance to take, if in fact the existing 12C is toast.

This goes against McLaren's press release that claims it does not replace 12C.
Actually Tim, McLaren's press release is somewhat carefully worded in that regard and doesn't say anything about continued production of the 12C as we know it today.

McLaren Automotive will reveal at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show the latest addition to its range of groundbreaking supercars - the McLaren 650S.

Designed and developed to offer the enthusiast driver the ultimate in luxury, engagement and excitement, as well as dramatic yet beautiful styling, the McLaren 650S is the result of 50 years of competing, and winning, at the highest levels of motorsport. It takes learnings from both the 12C as well as the sell-out McLaren P1™ and will be positioned between the two on McLaren Automotive’s supercar grid.

More details of the McLaren 650S will be announced in the run-up to the car’s global reveal which will take place on Stand 1240, Hall 1 at 12.00CET (11.00GMT), Tuesday 4 March 2014 in Geneva.
The mention of positioning of the 650S could seem to imply that the 12C will continue on, but I'm still not seeing it that way and will be surprised if that is the case based on what I have heard from people in the ordering stream.

I don't think it is - Ferrari as a road car company is a much more established brand with decades of foundation to build on. McLaren is the new kid in town and needs to keep things fresh. They also have a mindset of continuous development and product improvements so I wouldn't expect them to stand in one place for nearly as long.
