you can remain humble and own a mclaren. It’s not like you bought a Lambo. ;).

enjoy the car- but she is right, don’t be a douche.
I fixed it
I almost posted the same change :)

I like to think that people appreciate McLarens as cars, not status symbols. Around here other car people seem to appreciate that it's not another Tesla or 911 - the clitoris cars.

Hi everyone first post here. I’m the owner of a 2022 GT and absolutely love it. Couldn’t be happier with the car but there is a lot of emotions behind it… maybe it’s me.

I’m a young guy (31) that runs a business with a family and pretty normal life. My wife is worried that our fiends will judge us and now look at us different after buying this car. I’m usually the kind of person that couldn’t care less but I don’t want to be showy or “hey look at me” I just love the car. If anyone has had this feeling would love to hear your thoughts.
When I bought mine I thought there might be a big deal made by friends and family, but there really wasn't. Friends were proud of me for getting something nice for myself because they know I put the work in, family was proud because they saw it as a symbol of success, and my wife was mad and is now my ex-wife. I got a non-flashy color to avoid attention and I pump gas at specific places and times to avoid attention.
Same here. First, if they were real friends, they would be happy for you and support that you built a position to afford a car like yours.
Second, if you want to undo the "D-Bag factor", don't be one! It's a car after all. Take kids out for a spin. Let people sit in it. Sharing is the best way to counter anyone reading the "too flashy" comment as a negative.

Above all, silence all the voices and just enjoy the car. The thing I love about McLaren is generally, owners are drivers, not collectors.
I've been told by people at car shows about other people at car shows that either wouldn't be near their car for them to talk about it (and would have it locked up, windows up) or blew them off if they asked a question. Those were always Ferrari and Lamborghini owners. Some of them come to me thinking I'll be like those other people and shocked I know about the car, encourage taking pictures, sitting in it, etc. Parents can't believe I let their kids in it, after they told their kid no. If you treat it like any other car, people won't alienate you for it.

Owning an exotic, especially at our age, definitely comes with some image considerations. There are certainly places that I won't drive my car, as I know that the image I will project would not be conducive to those particular relationships. I have a lot of friends and family who struggle to make ends meet, and telling them about my car, or showing them my car, would do nothing but cause strife (only my immediately family and in-laws know about my cars). I also don't take my exotics to volunteer events where I know a lot of folks are down on their luck, it's just poor taste.

That said, I still put a ton of miles on my cars, and choosing not to drive it a handful of times a month doesn't bother me in the least.

Great post OP. Thanks for sharing. I used to get quite uncomfortable when people took pictures of the car on the highway while driving but I've gotten used to it now. I change lanes if possible and let the distracted driver by. Enjoy the experience.
I've had issues with them riding in blind spots and aggressively trying to follow. If there is room to do so, I give them good content by showing how fast I can get away from them.

The truth is that you can't drive a McLaren without getting ALOT of attention. Anyone who buys one and thinks otherwise is mistaken. That said, I approach owning my car by realizing I have earned it but I'm fortunate to own it. So for those who show interest I am always open to sharing information about the car, letting them sit in it, etc. I try to be informed on my car, the cars McLaren currently offer, and interesting things about Bruce McLaren. If there are friends that feel jealous after that, they're not friends.

I have 2 McLarens and I don't get a lot of attention. As a matter of fact, my 12C gets more attention than my 720. I did a 10 hour drive without a single person taking a picture or video of the 720 on the road or at stops. The 12C it often happens. The trick is don't get a bright color.
