Noticed this crack the other day

It's not a stone chip it is coming from the side, either the door shutting has caused it or the body flexing ?
Anyway the good news is it has been approved for warranty replacement - is this a one off or has anyone else seen/heard about this issue ?

So 6 months later and whilst sitting on the drive way I notice this this morning.

I text my dealer service manager who replies "gutted are you going to put it through insurance" WTF..... Is he for real there is no impact it is a stress crack exactly like before.
I replied and asked him to get it warranty approved and also to ask if the extended warranty covers this fault, there is no way any insurance companies are going to be paying for two new windscreens per year !

Apparently, McLaren is now very specific on how much adhesive to apply, not too much, not too little and very even. Sounds to me like they have not yet really figured it out but I surmise that the flex of the CF tub is causing these issues.

Warranty issue and a well known one
Hence why I'm not impressed with my Service manager suggesting an insurance claim, he saw the picture and has changed out my last screen 6 months ago with a similar crack in virtually the same place

He got back to me and said to bring it in for them to look at, he also confirmed that once out of factory warranty the extended warranty will not cover these cracks........ this really pisses me off (n)

And here I thought carbon fiber tubs didn't flex. At least not enough to crack glass.

That is BS, sounds like a crappy service mngr. This is a well known issue. Mine cracked and the dealer replaced no questions asked. The windshield was on backorder as many of them are cracking.

Apparently the original mnfr of the glass made them too thin but the newer glass is supposed to be a bit thicker.

Is the windshield cracking on the Spiders or have they fixed it now?
Mine is a spider, I have had the windshield in place now for a few days but it hasn't been driven. I will report back if it cracks again but I feel that the problem has been resolved with the new version.

bad service manager. mine would replace even if out of warranty if it was a recurring issue. my dealer now stocks guerrilla glass and windshields.... so far on my 2018.... delivered in january 2018.... 1 guerrilla glass cracked but so far ok with windshield.... knock on wood

Don't blame the service manager with these decisions. They have to take pictures of the screen and send to the warranty guys at Mclaren. They sign off on whether it is a warranty claim or not. I had mine crack on 600 LT.

They know they have to order it and didn't want the car sitting at the dealer waiting for the windshield (car is perfectly driveable). They came to my house and took pictures and sent to Mclaren for their assessment. It was hard for me to tell but there seems to be some two microscopic chips on the pictures... Not covered under warranty.

What you say makes sense but his opening gambit shouldn't have been to suggest my insurance will be paying IMO
I can't see any impact chips, could you have a look at these photos and show me what you saw ? TIA

I think I worded it wrong. In my particular situation... I couldn't see the microscopic chips but they said that there was a couple and Mclaren wouldn't sign off on it as a warranty claim (btw; on 600 LT; mine is in the same place as your's).

Did you get to see the alleged micro chips ? That sounds very dubious to me I'd want to get an independent windscreen specialist involved if I couldn't easily see the chips.

I don't see it (it's in the part of the windshield that is tinted). Normally, I'd object or take it furthur. However, I have a very strong relationship with my dealer and I pretty much trust what they say.

My dealer did tell me that Mclaren has become very stringent in this (probably because people were trying to slide the regular cracks as a stress crack).

It's been about two months and I haven't gotten the replacement yet (It hasn't hurt the enjoyment of my car ( I've tracked it a couple of times with the crack).

i think they played games with you IMHO... these screens are all cracking for stress. you get hit with a rock, you will know it, you will see it. not sure i buy the excuse they gave you. its a known issue. never heard of microscopic chips and if there are such things, they should not cause a crack like that. i would have fought it.

It hasn’t been replaced yet .

Coincidentally, I had a crack on 720s at the same time . They assessed the 720s crack as a stress crack. (I had stone chips in the past on 720 that did cause a crack which I paid for ) my second windshield got the stress crack . .

It took two years for the 720s to get a stress crack and Ive been driving it really hard the last two years .

2 months and neither has been replaced yet

According to my dealer, there hasn’t been many stress cracks at all (no reason for me to doubt that statement and they have delivered , many , many, many 720s.)
