It has been 14 years since McLaren has won the F1 constructors title (1998: Mika and David). McLaren's intellectual and financial resources are spread over F1, MP4-12C, P1 and I do not know what else. Red Bull shows no signs of fading. Mercedes engines and Vodophone are on board this year and next.

So, given the world McLaren is in today (drivers, designers, engines, etc.), what changes would YOU recommend to win the championship in 2013? You are Ron D's right hand adviser. What would you say?

Form a Joint Venture with Red Bull and sign Andy and Robbie as lead drivers with Robbie as Chief of PR and Insist Andy drives in his Crocodile Shoes. So that covers intellectual resource .

They would bring in £millions in global sponsorships with their wit and racing wisdom thus allowing full funding of development. That covers finance.

There would have to be some rule changes as well........

Andy, I will have a word with Ron but, I suspect, it will come down to his acceptance that PR needs beefing up. I'm sure Robbie has few doubts!

Heck. If that's the approach we're taking, I want to be the Grid Girls' liaison. You guys can do the rest of it.

OK. Now that we've all vented our foolishness, I guess it tells me I wrote a foolish question to begin with. If anyone has a real suggestion, I'd like to hear it.

Sorry for highjacking your thread George,i guess we do fool around when we have nothing constructive to say!!
But its good to keep a thread active untill someone spots it and does have an opinion, all i can say is keep doing what they are good at,and hopefully they will get an edge somewhere,at least next season they will start at the top of the pitstop list, something that would have put them a good second place if they had done so this season.:)

Highjacking is part of the experience, and it's better than being ignored (which was where my thread is/was going). Maybe Ron D will chime in. Maybe one of the Grid Girls will.:D:rolleyes: We shall see.:) It's all good.

Great question. I think we've got a short amount of time to change McLaren's project for 2013 - the foundation has already been laid. Any large shift in personnel would largely only have an effect in 2014 and on.

Anyhoot, regardless of the year, I think it would be best to:

* Advise a reinterpretation of the rule book in a more risky manner.
* Raise hell about reliability
* Increase number of engineer personel
* Increase spending in r&d and simulation
* Poach a very senior tech person from each of the competition, primarily Red Bull (ideally one of Adrian Newey (Chief Technical Officer) Rob Marshall (Chief Designer) Peter Prodromou (Head of Aerodynamics), a) to take momentum away from them, b) get an insight of what they're doing and c) increase strength in our technical department.

Having watched the last race, and in particular, the spectacular lap from Lewis's to qualifying ( viewed from the front mounted camera ) I concluded they need a competitive racing driver for 2013.........a bit in the Hamilton mould!

Some hard work in the wind tunnel combined with innovation ( the difficult bit ) is needed to beat Red Bull plus other drivers need to take Alonso out on the first bend more often..........that guy can drive but can he race???

Reliability has reared it's head and needs dealing with.

Guess Mclaren can't impact the engine? Or tyres or brakes.......I assume.

The rules will impact but I'm not sure what is changing.
