I am new to the forums and am finalizing my MP4-12C order for an April delivery. My concerns / questions revolve around the IRIS system, as it is no longer a "required option". In the States, this is a 6,850.00 adder. The way I understand it :

Standard sound system :
Meridian sourced
4 speakers

IRIS :
Meridian sourced
7 speakers
Voice activation
WLAN connectivity
NAV

I have read comments from McLaren that IRIS will do things never before seen in the industry. Any clues?
Does anyone have a working IRIS to report on ?
Sound quality difference between the two ?
A power difference / subwoofer ?

If it’s going to provide satellite radio, a back up camera, over-the-air software updates for the car, in car telemetry, in car dyno, or race track playback, I would find it worth the adder. 7K for nav and 3 more speakers is not something I want to blindly sign up for.

Thanks !!

You make a fair point Bill, and the only advice we can give you is what Bruce says.
We are all hoping for everything you suggest, but nobody has any info yet, other than to say that so far everything Mclaren promised they have delivered on,and more so.Even if the British motoring media have different ideas.
My only concern is that all this was in the pipeline until they had to change supplier, and maybe they have had to dumb-down a little from their original plans.
It is time their PR machine started earning its money again, after there first atempt, and giving customers a better idea of what to expect,we are all grown men ,we can handle it!!!Afterall if its now not obligatory, those of us that are getting it ,are getting a discount, and those that are paying for it,need to know what they are paying for.
MCLAREN,its not a selling point anymore, let customers know what its capable of please???????

I understood that one of the things that IRIS will offer is the ability to set the car up for specific tracks, which it will recognize via its GPS. This sounds waaaaay too clever, so might have been simple hype tho'

Don't think a back-up camera is part of it - you have to pay extra for parking sensors, at least in the US.

I specc'd IRIS to be able to upload all my tunes etc.

Moncho,

Miss the NSX do you? I have a '92 that I've owned for 17 years and I'm not sure I can part with it.

Texas Mongrel, get with Gren at Park Place and let's get together. I would love to see your Ford GT.

I need to shoot 2 of the below to make room (both physically and financially !)

2006 Caymans S with GT3 front and Carrera S motor
2006 V8 Vantage
1992 Acura NSX

I missed my NSX for a little bit, until I realized how underpowered it was compared to the R8 that replaced it. I think the same will happen when I replace the R8 with the 12c. All three of these cars are very drivable and easy to live with, it's mostly an emotional attachment until you realized the amazing machine you're upgrading to. You can't go wrong... Go with you gut. Once you have the 12c, you won't be driving anything else!
I think the NSX will age better. It's already a "near classic".
Good luck.

keep the cayman, but frankly the 12C should replace all.

Are you sure the IRIS is now optional?? I didn't not have an option when ordering.

I am also not even sure this "IRIS" will have satellite radio!?!? Which would totally suck for how I like to listen to audio on the road. I don't want to have to load music to my car and then replace it or update it all the time.

It would be nice if we could get a better update on what IRIS actually is at this point.

well, I'm definitely driving up to the big D for McLaren's Grand Opening on Jan 19th, but my sister will be in town, so I'll need to take the Range Rover so all of us can fit. Hopefully I will get to meet a bunch of you guys at the party tho'

Santa didn't leave my new car under the tree, but I did get a biography of Bruce McLaren, so he was on the right track.

merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone, let's hope we'll all be driving Macs in 2012
