I recently purchased a 2018 720s from out of state which came with only one key. Initially my local mclaren dealer quoted $800 for a spare key, which I was willing to pay, then he said they don't sell single spares, and I would need to purchase a set of spares (two) for $2400, which sounded like a serious shake down...does anyone have any experience with this? Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks

Different dealers have different policies .

I went through one front rotor and was told that I needed to buy a pair because dealer has to buy the parts in pairs .

I was subsequently told by another dealer that they would have sold me just one rotor and to call them next time .

Rotors are very different than keys. For liability reasons I could see why they would be hesitant to sell just one rotor. However there shouldn't be a "policy" to sell keys in pairs. That is just a money hungry service department.

Get a used one and find someone with the capability to program it. My local dealer will program keys for $100. Note this doesn't include cutting the metal blade to fit the physical lock, only the electrical programming of the key.

I assume this is rhetorical coming from you but my understanding is you would need to get a new lock cylinder/tumbler + new blades cut to that cylinder. $$$$

That’s my understanding too . The keys can’t be re-cut . It’s a very expensive process . Getting an extra key fob or re-programming key fobs do not fix the entire issue . You won’t be able to get into the car unless a new lock cylinder is also replaced .

I actually thought your dealer may have been able to cut keys for the same cylinder based on your initial posting . That would’ve been big news

Thanks for suggestion. I found a place in huntingdon Beach that says they can provide me a new key and reprogram it for me just waiting on a quote 🤞
