I have been curious about how the 720s straight-line acceleration feels, specifically when compared to a 600LT. I find the 600LT pretty fast, but it's not scary or intimidating when I do pulls. Numbers aside, does the 720s feel significantly quicker in a straight line than the 600 per your butt dyno? Mostly interested in rolling start pulls, like highway speeds and faster. Do you miss anything about the 600 when compared to your 720?
The 600LT felt really fast at an earlier(lower) speed than the 720S. It has that go-kart feel to it. In the 720S I didn’t feel the speed until I reached much higher, illegal speed and by then it was absolutely shit my pants moment when I started noticing the trees on the road warping through space. I love both cars I don’t really think they are really apple to apple. Like I said it’s a different experience and is exactly I was looking for.

What I miss the most about the 600LT is the rawness and noise and senna seats. I know one can get all that back and more with a 765LT but I am not fortunate enough to own one.

I would do it knowing you have a lot of time under your belt with a 570S. Also, you will be getting a car with quite a bit lower mileage. Just realize you drove the 720S fast but the 720S is a LOT Faster if you drive it hard. Especially in the mid range, 60 to 180. Bang from 60 to 180 to 60 10 times in a row and you will understand.

Interesting how the survey says 2/3rds Yes and 1/3rd No. I think this attests to how good the 570S is!

But, well, since I had the money laying around and Volcano Red is just a stunning color and it's not easy to find, I'm going for the 720S. Yep, a bit of a lark, but any purchase of a McLaren is really that...

This. The 600LT feels fast at lower speeds without having to go past 100. 720s begins to feel fast at high speeds and can get you in trouble real fast. If you have a lot of open roads or onnthe autobahn, 720s... crowded freeways, 600LT.

As a supercar tech, I've been honored to personally appreciate all available Mclaren models except for a few and I have to say the 720S has a very special place in my heart. There's just something about this chassis that I love. You can make a 570 faster than a 720 but it'll never look as good. Then you can spend 2k on the 720 and make it faster than almost anything else on the road... For me, there's no comparison. Besides the body of course, you get the hopped up tuning, the extra little gadgets like the aero package spmmorrow eluded to and the higher resale value. I love the 570 of course, but it's a level lower.
So for around 2K what would you do to make the 720s Faster?

Ok guys (are there any women here?), here's my quandary. I love my 570S, 4 years old, track and street driving, 24k miles, out of warranty. A 720S just showed up locally that was owned by my buddy previously, so I know its history. 14k miles, 5 years old, street and track. Beautiful Volcano Red, which seems rare.

After trade-in, $100k out of pocket (plus some taxes).

I drove a 720S at COTA the same weekend I drove my 570S. My conclusion at the time was "yes, the 720 is higher performing, but is it worth $100k for the higher performance?" I didn't think so. But I do absolutely love the Volcano Red, which is the only reason I'm even considering this.

What would you do? Buy the other guy's problems (already pretty well sorted)? Stay with what you know? Save the $100k for the next stablemate (non-McLaren probably, something completely different).
I'd go with the 720s as it is the newer chassis. The Mono-cage II. Also I didn't like the side view of the 540-570 range. Neither did the general purchasers as they did not sell globally as well as the 650 or 720 ranges. What's 100K$ going to do for you? You like looking at numbers in black on a computer screen? Or getting out & doing your thing? Your nothing of packing up work are you? Good, then you earn more money for your next car, which will probably unfortunately have to be a hybrid!

If you think any of these cars are slow in stock form..... you are a better man than me! I've driven all the cars back to back), except the 765, and in the real world they are different flavors from the same ice cream store. I've spent some time at the track with my 570 'Track Pack' and there really hasn't been anything that I can't run away from.

As much as I like the 720/765...... I don't see $100K+ delta. If all you are going to do is stomp on the gas pedal and hold on for dear life, I suppose you would need as much HP as possible. Unless the skill levels has improved over the years, I haven't had too many students that have the skills to be let loose in a Miata, let alone 600+.

All of the McLarens are pretty much on another level. The carbon tub, the engineering, etc. make them amazing. Get whichever one you love and enjoy it. But unless you make your living driving on Sunday afternoons, you won't be underpowered.

Both cars are great but the 720s will go down as the modern GOAT, the 570s will go down as one of the least ‘amazing’ McLarens made. I owned a 570 track pack and a 720 after and there is no comparison between them.

There is a solid 3-5 second per lap delta between the cars on track. In racing terms that’s a country mile. So if no one was able to pull away from you and put you out of sight in 2-3 laps then their skill level wasn’t up to par. This isn’t hyperbole, the 720 is MUCH faster period. If you can’t feel a 4 second difference per lap then having either car won’t matter because 20 seconds a lap off the pace isn’t really driving...

Remember, I said... "In the real world" I didn't see a $100K delta. The 720 is a great car and I will probably add one as I think it is easily the car that made all the rest have to play catch up... and honestly I don't think they have.

So, I guess you must be an expert track driver snd able to wring that 720 by the neck. Good for you. You are in another league if you think the 570 is 'uninteresting'. I have left guys in 720s for dead..... in the mountains and at the track. In the slow one! It's obviously not the car. I'm not the best. I've done some racing and been instructing for 30 years. A real racer in a Fiat Panda would probably lap all of us. But unless you make your living driving on Sunday afternoons.... it just doesn't matter..... except for magazine racers.

My point is, they are all fast. The car's abilities exceed the talent of 99.5%of the guys that buy them... by a lot. Most are used to go to coffee, dinner and stop light drag races. Most never see a track and those that do, go a few times a year at best. The extra power is great, but it's basically academic in the real world.

I kind of agree. All of these are various variations of a very similar thing. Some will really click with some models over others. And some will be able to really appreciate the delta. I'm not one of them. The cars are mostly similar and performance is similar and the delta between a good driver and crap one will be far greater than the delta between the cars. Heck, I'm sure the pro drivers could probably drive a civic type R and school me.

So for me the question comes out like this. I REALLY LOVE what I have. it's irrational stupid but makes me happy. Will this new irrational stupid purchase make me 100/200/300k more happy. For me, the answer has long been, no, it's not worth it. Thankfully for McLaren, I think most see lots of good reasons (and on paper there are truly a lot of cool and better characteristics on the newer models). In the end, I do not think there is a right or wrong answer to any of that. Just different people making their own value judgments about something that is stupendously irrational to start.

I'm happy for those that feel the need for the latest and greatest and I'm happy for those that are enjoying what they got. The important thing is it makes sense for you. Justifying it seems mostly an exercise in making up fun rationales for what is mostly an irrational thing to start.
