Would you pay $100k to upgrade from a 24k mile 570S to a 14k mile 720S, both out of warranty?

Ok guys (are there any women here?), here's my quandary. I love my 570S, 4 years old, track and street driving, 24k miles, out of warranty. A 720S just showed up locally that was owned by my buddy previously, so I know its history. 14k miles, 5 years old, street and track. Beautiful Volcano Red, which seems rare.

After trade-in, $100k out of pocket (plus some taxes).

I drove a 720S at COTA the same weekend I drove my 570S. My conclusion at the time was "yes, the 720 is higher performing, but is it worth $100k for the higher performance?" I didn't think so. But I do absolutely love the Volcano Red, which is the only reason I'm even considering this.

What would you do? Buy the other guy's problems (already pretty well sorted)? Stay with what you know? Save the $100k for the next stablemate (non-McLaren probably, something completely different).

Do you have the bandwidth in life or time to play with 2 cars? I’ve tried it and I personally don’t. But I’m also more of a cool toy type or owner vs track driver.

after the 720. I never grabbed the keys to any other toy

I have the same conundrum. The only thing that makes it possibly worthwhile for me is the way the Pure 720s handle, but I strongly suspect that's because they align them with a lot of negative camber and the same can probably be achieved with the 570. The 720 didn't feel that much quicker to me.

They have different models for this exact reason. Personally. I’d stay put. The 720 is amazing but “ “most” people never even find the limit on a 570 let alone the 720.
720 is faster. Has better suspension. Active areo. Is that worth 100k? Only you can make that decision. I’d rather have a stablemate (which is what I did) it’s nice to have some variety (and a manual analog car for something different)

As a supercar tech, I've been honored to personally appreciate all available Mclaren models except for a few and I have to say the 720S has a very special place in my heart. There's just something about this chassis that I love. You can make a 570 faster than a 720 but it'll never look as good. Then you can spend 2k on the 720 and make it faster than almost anything else on the road... For me, there's no comparison. Besides the body of course, you get the hopped up tuning, the extra little gadgets like the aero package spmmorrow eluded to and the higher resale value. I love the 570 of course, but it's a level lower.

Tricky as it seems you still feel good with your 570, in fact you say love it. To your own admission, you didn't think the 720 was worth the 100k even though you drove both to their limits at the track, which is a pretty great way to tell the differences between the two cars.

It sounds like a big driver is the car color. If the 720 was not volcano red, would you even be considering it ? There's always an itch to try something new, but is a 100k itch worth the scratch? If funds were unlimited, yeah for sure. But if 100k is something that you might feel some regret when you sleep at night, maybe not worth it.

Both 570 and 720 are great cars. I like the look of the 720 a bit more than the 570, however, I like the look of the 600LT best between the three. Must be the aero and fixed wing and crazy silly aggressive diffuser, not to mention the flame thrower exhausts. If you like an analog type of suspension, the 570 is great. The trick suspension on the 720 seems great too, but I was talking to an old school race car driver, and he prefers the suspension on the 570 because he could feel the road more - not sure if I am doing his explanation justice. The 720 is probably like a magic carpet ride compared to the 570 - but I've never driven one to compare, so I couldn't say for sure. Good luck, post some pics if you get it :)

Yes the 720s is next level performance but IMO it’s not just about performance it’s about how it makes you feel. Will you open the garage door and think wow this is mine every time?

Two years ago I was without the wow car after owning an original R8 for 7 years. I wasn’t specifically looking for anything but happened to just be browsing on autotrader and came across VR 720s and that was it.

It was a heart purchase it wasn’t the performance alone it was how it made me feel when I saw and drove it, so color can be the clincher, was for me and I don’t regret it.

Dear Gary,
I swapped my 4year old 570s spider for a 1 year old 720s spider just after Christmas last year. The weather in the UK has not cooperated but even with just a limited number of trips the excitement levels the 720s delivers are a significant step up from the 570s. Ballistic acceleration and a much better ride are real benefits. Would recommend you do the same. Cheers, Paul.

Think that a 720s is worth the price of the upgrade vs the 570s … after all it’s still one of the highest performing super cars and one of the few that is great from daily driving grocery getter to track weapon to make an impression at a nice high end restaurant or hotel … the use is very flexible just for what you wish to do with it - that is great a bonus vs pure track and weekend cars like a 3rs or sth alike

How about from the 600LT? Haven't driven a 720 yet though.
I went from 600LT coupe to 720S spider. The 600LT is definitely more raw and noisy, but the 720S is a step up in speed and look. Active aero is just cooler. I just like to experience different things and the 720S spider did not disappoint. With top up though, it might be less fun than a 600LT because the cabin became too quiet.

I have been curious about how the 720s straight-line acceleration feels, specifically when compared to a 600LT. I find the 600LT pretty fast, but it's not scary or intimidating when I do pulls. Numbers aside, does the 720s feel significantly quicker in a straight line than the 600 per your butt dyno? Mostly interested in rolling start pulls, like highway speeds and faster. Do you miss anything about the 600 when compared to your 720?

My 570 feels scary fast from naught-to-60, 60-100, even 80-120, because the back end is just jumping back and forth wanting to lead. Whoa Nellie!

On my 720 test drive I was moving along at 75 because of traffic, then the traffic cleared and I was just doing 120 before the salesman could even grimace. No muss, no fuss.

Same for me. Mine feels scary fast, and the 720 didn't feel much different, just much twitchier with more software intervention on corner exit.

I spent 6 months agonizing over the same issue. Had a 570s spider for two years that was brilliant and I loved the car, but for some mysterious reason still wanted a 720. Have had the 720 spider for a year and the car is spectacular, but I still have fond memories of the 570. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Good luck.
