The first major sports car race of the year, the 24 Hours of Daytona returns this weekend for its 59th running. This year's field is littered with star names from across the American, European and Asian motorsport disciplines, so we expect the full 24 hours to be filled with drama and intrigue.
We felt this excuse enough to remember one of the most iconic race cars of all time, the Porsche 917K, and its first victory on its public debut at the same event in 1970. John Wyer's Gulf-sponsored team finished 1-2 in the race, with the winning car breaking the distance record by 190 miles. It was this victory effectively began the 917K's domination of the World Sportscar Championship for the next two seasons.
