The main selling point IMO of the 991 competitor will be the fact it shares the same platform as the 12c,this i would suspect will then be the first CF tubbed car in the sportscar sector,so lightweight ,strengh, and safety and several years ahead of the competition.SO handeling will be far superior and power can be suited to the competitors at that time,so its a no brainer it the money is the same. Also with production set at 2500 per annum worldwide, exclusive to boot

I'm afraid so, I'm gonna get probably hated for this, but manual transmissions are kind of old. I don't see anything wrong with dual-clutch.
After you have driven a 12C,you see no reason to go back apart from nostalga:)
I love a good manual 'box. But I'm infinitely aware of how much it would change the 12C (and how much it would slow it down). Am I sad they're going away? Absolutely. But I do get it.

Whereas previously a manual 'box was the only way to go for max performance, eventually they'll be the only choice for nostalgic fun, relegated to Miatas, GTIs and the like. Eventually it'll be very hard to find any serious performance car with a stick. <snif>
I thought I'd miss a 3rd pedal and a shifter too. I was wrong.

I don't know, the 6-speed DCT in my daughter's 2011 GTI is so slick they may disappear from those as well. :)
I don't even know how to drive a manual, I feel really bad about it, but your comments are encouraging, kind of
I'd rather have a DCT than the manual simply because I used to left foot brake (old habits die hard from karting) but haven't been able to driving a normal manual. Gimme that fun back!
What are the current thoughts on the engine specs?
A little high rpm na v8 revving to 8500+ rpm would be music.
But would it provide the characteristics mclaren are after? Whatever that may be.

I would actually like to see a flat-six engine at the back, similar to the 911's, but it would take a lot of resources, so I think a detuned V8 is the most realistic choice.

Turbo provides the most power and torque for the lightest weight and smallest packaging. Can't see them using anything else unless it can better those criteria. KERS or similar tech is a possibility, however.
That's true, but will the p13 be targeted at the level of power that the turbos would suit. As a nice na v8 can produce a fairly decent amount of power without the weight of the turbo hardware, allowing for a cheaper package, with "adequate" power for the target market/competition.
Do you guys think it'll target the 911 Turbo or the base Carrera?
Not sure, but the turbo end of the porche range is pretty close to the price of the 12c already, so the na end of the scale would provide a bigger difference to broaden mclarens market share. Just a thought.

Don't think there will be anything "decent" about the amount of power.

I don't follow? Lol.

I can't imagine P13 being much less than 911 TT money. What will the base 991 Turbo have, 530+ HP? The 12C was just bumped to approx 620, so already there is a lot of headroom to overpower the Porsche. If McLaren bumps the 12C again before P13 arrives, then even more headroom. P13 could have close to 600 HP. That would require turbo.
Good point, I just looked at the prices of the turbos here in Australia. Base turbo coupe, 363000 dollars compared to the mclaren at near 500000. Does leave a good margin between the p13 and 12c. Maybe a turbo v6 ala f1 2014 could be employed.

600 HP on the P13 would render the 12C a bit useless, even with a slight power bump. I think it should target a broader audience, which is why it should be positioned somewhere between the 911 Turbo and Carrera.

Nah. McLaren isn't in this to be "good enough". It may not have 600, but it will be turbo.
It would be nice if Mclaren didn't engage in the power/numbers battle for the P13 but went purely for driving experience. Ideally for me, something along the lines of a lighter weight/smaller version of the mp4-12c without the turbo from the current engine so maybe with 420hp and 1250kg with fluids the power/weight ratio would still be >300hp/ton and with a simpler electrical control set to help with weight reduction would be nice....

Respectfully, I have to disagree and further hypothesize that such a direction would be a financial disaster for McLaren. The car you are describing is essentially a Lotus and there is no compelling market for it. McLaren will keep redefining their "driving experience" and strive for even lower weight through the use of innovation and materials, but leading edge technology will, and should, always be part of their design. The driving experience you are after is traditional in nature, goes hand in hand with a manual gearbox and minimal aero, too. Not the way forward for McLaren! :)
