New owner with engine fault

Hey guys,

I just picked up a 2015 650S and was driving home from the dealership when the car went into limp mode and said "engine fault." I was driving spiritedly in manual mode on the highway, dropping gears and flooring it to feel the power when suddenly the car said fault with the cruise control followed by engine fault. Once I got home I turned the car off for approx 30 min and restarted with no faults. I drove around the neighborhood in manual mode letting the car rev out with zero issues. What could be the problem? Now i'm afraid to push it until I get it checked by the dealer.

Other than the frustrating first drive, the car is awesome when it works.

Thanks,

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

Difficult to say what the issue is without the codes. Do you have an OBD2 reader? The codes might still be there in pending, though really the McLaren diagnostic tool is best to read them. They should be able to read the historical codes for something like engine/cruise failure. How far is the dealer? I would get it there sooner rather than later in case there is a time limit on how long the code stays stored (though, again, since it doesn't appear to be emissions related, the code should stick around in permanent diagnostic memory).

Thanks!

Z.

Thanks for the reply. I don't own a diagnostic reader, but the dealership is about 40min away which isn't too bad. I'm going to try and replicate the initial drive per the dealers request and see if I throw a code or go into limp mode again. I will bring the car in next week in any event just to make sure everything is copacetic.

Its funny, I've always had Ferrari's and AMG's which are known for issues, but I've been very fortunate to not encounter a single one. Everyone told me my luck would run out with McLaren and I was hoping that wouldn't be the case, but its not looking good thus far. Too bad as I like the 650s better than my 488 or Speciale.

Well, I took it out for a spirited drive and ran into the same issue again. I pulled over turned the car off for ten minutes and the limp mode and engine fault message went away. I'm still waiting for the dealer to call me back for an appointment. I'll share what they find when I get it there.

Don't panic. The fact that it goes away is good. Probably just a sensor reaction after hard driving. The car may of been sitting around for a while waiting to be sold. As an uneducated thought, may be build ups in the system that need to clean out and are tripping up various air/intake/exhaust sensors etc??

The computer can do weird one off sensor things sometimes. I had a gearbox warning once for a second when idleing in garage. obviously not real as never, ever came back. Only went on for a second. No codes recorded. No issues at all according to Mac.

I bought an R8 once and a gearbox malfunction light came on the drive home after buying it. So I feel your alarm and pain. Unfortunately the R8 prob was real, but not too serious. Could still drive for 2 months while waiting for part. Audi said was ok to do.

Let us know the outcome

Just heard back from the dealer and they said there is a fault with the throttle pedal and a new one must be ordered. I've searched the forum and have not come across another 650s with this problem. Hopefully, this will fix her and get me back on the road. So far I've owned this car a week and have only been able to enjoy it for 45min, I need to see what this car is all about.
