Speaking of which, the McLaren! Now, like most of you I’ve read half a dozen reviews and watched a dozen more featuring the stupidly named MP4-12C. The general consensus seems to be that the car is good but not great. It’s fast, but it’s not a Ferrari 458. Something is missing. Something isn’t quite right. Something is off. It’s not emotional enough. That last one should have been my tip off. The knock on the GT-R has long been that it’s not emotional, that it’s lacking a soul. Total nonsense (and bordering on if not crossing over into xenophobia and bigotry, in my humble opinion) — anyone that’s ever taken the GT-R over 5,000 rpm knows damn well that Godzilla’s got an angry, beautiful soul. That or it’s eaten someone else’s. Anyhow, I should have known that the McLaren MP4 12C would be totally wonderful. Because it truly is, and if you enjoy the physical act of driving you will love the McLaren. After my short stint in the shiny orange contraption I got out saying, “Man, I haven’t driven a real supercar in a long time.” What people forget, and what I forgot, is that constantly being mentioned in the same breath as the Ferrari 458 Italia means you’re talking about one of the world’s very best.
