Quote "Should I buy one? At this elevated price, the only real rival to the 458 Spider is the soft-top Lamborghini Gallardo, and the Ferrari comprehensively outguns it.

Next year, however, we’re expecting an open-top McLaren MP4-12C and this should provide more competition – although we doubt it will have anything like the visual or aural drama of the Ferrari.

So, for now at least, this is the finest open-top supercar you can buy. Albeit a pricey one. Is it better than the Coupe? Not quite, but we wouldn’t fault you for wanting the Spider’s extra pizzazz. "

the MP4-12C spider has been spied. I like the car and probably still retains the dihedral doors. It is simply a shame how it is simply measured against the prancing horse and I have finally realized that this is rather unfair to MP4. They are just very different. Well, seems like this magazine is passing a judgement before the baby even arrives which is also unfair. With that said, I think branding makes the difference but I see McLaren working very hard to improve its branding and identity.

Read a few very good reviews on the MP4 and been following. It is unfortunate that the project on MP4-12c is delayed indefinitely in Asia and I think McLaren should focus on Euro and US launch to fix all glitches before launching in Asia. The dealer is working on the mess right now no demo no deliverables no cars no response but 60 deposits with 20 refunded...

Believe what you want to believe, but I am certain the allure of the 12C spyder will outshine the 458, and I think Ferrari knows it. Added to the rest of McLaren's F1 inspired technology, we are now talking about an open carbon monocoque reminiscent of a Formula One racecar. Once again, McLaren's marketing will be more tightly aligned with actual F1 innovations, while Ferrari can only talk about it but is stuck soldiering on with a metal frame car until the end of the product cycle. I'm a coupe guy, but I don't doubt that this will resonate with many spyder customers.

The dihedral doors will just be an added bonus and very cool for a convertible. Hope they retain the Air Brake too, how awesome to see in the rear view with the top down.

The McLaren is not delayed indefinitely in Asia. My car will be delivered next month in Singapore. :D
p.s. Calitalia, there is an easy way to "scratch the itch" that keeps you coming back to this site.... ;)

yes sir. Re: SG, I will reserve any judgement until I actually see one that is delivered successfully in my home turf and in Singapore. Cautiously optimistic.

Re: Looks like the Aventador is growing on me and I think if means permits, I would want one but certainly not in place of my 458 Italia which is my DD now. I think its lineage is really growing on me since the diablo coutach days. Aventador, you buy it for the looks even if it doesn't start :) but same can be said on my 458. I am glad it is drivable.

Yes I think the dihedral and the carbon monocoque open top will be very cool features. Yes Ferrari would not migrate to a carbon platform at least not until 2015 on the next iteration as they had spent too much to develop the 458 and doubt they did spend money on carbon chassis so it wouldn't be first to market. Not necessarily a bad thing as they can now observe and then improve. The Aventador has migrated to the carbon platform, very cool.

Too bad the Aventador wasn't able to take advantage of CF's inherent lightness. Nice that the took the time to patent their 2002-era CF process.

From reading your prior post, i thought you have already pass judgement. In this forum you think the dihedral and CF are cool features and in F chat, you posted that the 12C spider is a DOA. The Aventador is a great looking car. For sure not a DD. If you had spare cash, get one why not.

DOA! Ha! The competition wishes!
Don't forget that also because of the carbon MonoCell, the 12C Spyder has the chance to gain little (if any) weight and also not lose any chassis rigidity, vs. the coupe. Nobody else can claim that. The McLaren salesman will not be lacking for competitive advantages in his sales pitch.

DOA in a sense that magazines unfairly prejudge before it even arrives. That's not fair.

I think you are reading too much into what he says in the article. All he is saying is that he doubts the 12C Spyder will look or sound as flamboyant as the 458 Spyder. That's a fair prediction, but a far cry from announcing the car as DOA. Basically, you can say the exact same thing about the 458 compared to an Aventador. It's all about personal taste.

For the umpteenth time, McLaren is forging their brand identity on being the most technologically innovative product. Those that get it, get it. For those that don't (or don't care for it), the typical brands remain.
Actually, I have to say that 458 Spider looks better than Italia and makes much more sense. It's not an all out performance car that Italia cheats to be, but gives you access to the elements and glorious sound and very decent performance. On the other hand, MP4 Spider should require no performance compromises compared to the coupe. Tough choice.

Well said!
It makes sense to me. :)

ER
any idea when are first deliveries are expected to be?
any idea when are first deliveries are expected to be?
I think they want 18 months out of the coupe first, summer in the Uk would be too early as it would damage residuals, something they are keen not to do
Lets hope they keep to it.
I would go for early spring 2013 (roundincircles????)
Remember the video where they show you the various jigs that they use for the construction of the coupe? Watch it again in the context of a spider. There are some hints on how the retractable roof would be designed.
I think the 458 spider looks awful. Ruins the roof line and shape of the side windows. Of course, I don't think any super car is better without a roof.
