The McLaren Can-Am cars are amazing, not just in terms of looks but in performance as well. There is a youtube video floating around of an F1 GTR vs McLaren Can Am on Spa, and the Can Am car had no problem staying ahead of the GTR on the straights.

You have to be very brave to drive one in anger. Fuel tanks are built into the frame right next to the driver.

Never mind the GTR, the CAN-AM cars often lapped many circuits quicker than the Formula One cars of the same era! Many of the world's best drivers (lots of F1 pilots) in an unrestricted series. And McLaren dominated for many years!
