Just got a letter from McLaren reminding me that my 2012 12C's Extended Service Contract (warranty) is up for its final renewal. It can be renewed for either one or two final years. (2013s have another year, obviously.) Any thoughts, recommendations or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

There are numerous threads debating whether warranties are worth the money and there are lots of owners on either side of the debate. My view - if your car is well maintained, well sorted and regularly driven paying ~$4k / yr for the warranty is generally not money well spent. If your car is not maintained or regularly driven then I would get one. The increasing number of independent shops like the McMedics as well as the ever growing cross parts reference list makes self insuring a cheaper alternative than 5-10 yrs ago.

How do you get a warranty if your car is not maintained?

Simply put if you define maintenance as taking your car to the dealer once a year then, yes, your car needs to be “maintained” to get a warranty. However, many people maintain their cars to a higher level than a once a year dealer visit. For example, how many owners religiously check their coolant and oil levels? There are a lot who don’t.
