I have looked around on here and the web, and I can't seem to find anyone that has replaced the IRIS with an aftermarket option. Have I completely brought back to life a thread that has been buried for a reason, or has someone successfully accomplished this for better overall functionality?

That is what I assumed had happen since nothing had a finished product. Is it crazy to go down this path if i intend to save the OEM unit?

I do not know. I always thought the there are at least a couple of ways to improve on the head unit was to hack it to allow side loading of other apps. Or, to find a better modern unit (basically whatever unit is in the Elva) and write an app to be backward compatible with the CAN other stuff on older models of IRIS. Also, I bet some of the older apps (like climate control apps) might run unmodified on the newer units.

I think the problem is, unless we get a really technically competent individual with a lot of energy and will to focus on this, the market just is not big enough for anyone to put in the work for these outcomes.

Of course the best positioned company to do such things is McLaren itself, but they seem uninterested. Shame, they probably could make the new elva head unit available for older models with not too much work, and they probably could charge $5k to upgrade it. Sadly, McLaren pricing on development seems on the order of American aerospace defense contractor pricing for development, where hammers cost $10,000. Also, I suspect there is zero desire to upgrade their really great cars and they hope that motivates people to upgrade to new models.

Would love to be wrong.

I believe you hit the nail on the head, and now these units are 5+ years old and sent out to pasture. I reached out to a local shop that works on a lot of high end cars to ask, might have to just settle for the spinning turbos and Akra V8 note blasting down the road. It would just be nice to have Sirius come through more often and find a rear view camera that actually shows me what's behind the car! Thanks for the input.

I have the factory rear view camera. It's meh. Resolution is bleh, but it does the job. Very overpriced. I hear you can get upgraded rear view mirrors with integrated rear view cameras and much more. I could see trying that and seeing if it could hook an audio output into IRIS so IRIS would see it just as some audio source you could play. That might be another vector.

Well if any company did it, they would corner the market. All they would have to do is get Apple AirPlay on it and I would jump at it!

Unfortunately what you say is basically true for IRIS2 on the 12C and 650. I could swear some controls on the 675 did interface with the car to get data from CAN or something. On the 540/570/etc series of cars, IRIS 2, I think worked to control HVAC, if I recall.

Apple car play / android auto runs on android 12.0 and supports all play store apps so you can have live tv / films should you wish.
I am only interested in Waze and car play although the message reading / dictation for WhatsApp and text messages is also vey hand during the commute.

Do you see any issues plugging in aftermarket display units aside from their poor operation? Could it cause warranty issues?

To my knowledge there is NO aftermarket display screens made today that can connect to, or replace any of the OEM McLaren IRIS I or IRIS II units.

This is the challenge. The McLaren hardware was manufactured by a Company called PARROT (who was already almost out of business when McLaren threw them the last big OEM contract of the companies life).

Parrot was know to build quirky weird stuff that was unique and total incompatible with any other device on the market at the time it was built (think 2009-2010)

Hence the reason parts or replacements or any help with the garbage they created is non-existent.. Well at least the car is a fantastic bit of kit!

Update. No after looking at the link it seems like it plugs into something as a replacemeant. Super interesting.

This is potentially really a big deal for many owners that are stuck with the ancient IRIS2 system.

It complete replaces the ISIS and is plug and play, as an extra there is a forward facing parking camera that triggers automatically after D is selected after being in R for 7 seconds or you can simply press the camera icon and the front camera operates for 7 seconds then automatically switches to the last function being used, really handy for forward parking where high kerbs are present
