Hey McLaren - Can you add a 'Kill Switch' to your cars!

.... so my neighbors don't 'kill me', when your cars go into weird electrical gyrations, with random alarm noise!!!

I thought 'Lucas Electronics' died years ago, apparently NOT, they are alive and unwell in McLarens!

I usually get that piercing alarm when I leave the drunk ajar and set the alarm.

Battery dead?
I'm driving the car and suddenly, a warning message to 'stop and apply the manual door release, as the electronic one has failed' .... so i carefully pull over and apply the manual door release, open and close the door a few more times and make sure the door release strap is back in its normal position.... i continue on my journey.

... 2 minutes later, same issue . same process

... after a few more warnings, i just press the lever and reset the message, but NO, the car will NOT accept that and proceeds to piss me off and warn on and off, incessantly, with 'messages and alarms', for the next 30 minutes.

... screw this, i turn the car around and start the 50 mile drive home, with non stop 'messages and alarms'.

... on the way home, the drivers door opens all by itself and fails to lock, so i have to hold it closed while driving with my other hand!

... I finally get home and try to lock the car, nope, now i get windows opening and closing, and security alarms going off ..... finally after 20 minutes of this BS i get the car to shut up, get in my backup car and go back to my usual Sunday drive, then lunch!

... now i wait to go to the dealer for diagnosis!

Hey McLaren, ONE warning is all i need and once i press reset, don't bother me again ..... i swear, this car has 'kindergarten level electronics' .... if you Brits can't get this shit sorted after 10+ years, outsource to the Japanese!

I would NEVER own a McLaren without a backup sports car!

The door opening while driving is somewhat frightening to say the least.

On thing that annoys me is there is no easy way to know "is my car up to date" in all ways. Over air updates really should be the norm. A lot of this stuff would be less of an issue. And if I understand it correctly, forget that we cant easily know are we 'up to date' lots of times an update will be performed but it can be incompletely or didn't stick or didnt go through fully.

This really should no longer be an issue in 2023. Sadly, only the Artura has the capacity to address this issue, even the 750 is sitting back on an archaic system that could address many of these electronic gremlins.
A fantastic car being let down by shitty electronics, very sad!

..... my sons 2019 $20k Hyundai Sonata has 10x better electronics and even has Apple car play!

Yea I feel your pain! I have been saying this to my friends the last couple of weeks. I plan to keep my 720 but I need to get back into a Ferrari as my backup or optional car. My car was just in the dealer for a month getting the transmission replaced and now I just got battery warning on my dash on the way home so back to the dealer it goes.

Fun cars but way to many issues and downtime. I honestly can't see myself buying another Mclaren after this.

This is one reason I chose a 570. From the reading I did, it seemed to have fewer gremlins and didn't have the added complications of the suspension and active aero.

He wouldn't drunk her either, at least he didn't in my presence.

It could be a battery, could just need the BMS disconnected from the car and reconnected after it's had some time to think about what it's done, could just need a negative battery terminal pull for an hour.

I don't want that. I don't need a manufacturer pushing out a bad update breaking my car overnight without my knowledge. Having that communication ability also opens up the ability to track how the car is being used, where the car is being used, and any other info they want to casually use.

I disagree. There are 2 gremlins 570's have I come across very commonly that are a big deal. Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery causing the airbag light to come on, or the driver window controls to malfunction and make the passenger window not work. That's a pretty simple task to require MDS to fix it.

Well they should make a setting for you to be able to not take updates (very common thing) and for me to take the updates. A lot of tesla's get updated pretty regularly and for most people it's a good thing. But respect those who prefer not to, and they should have the option not to.

Agree, they should have to get our permission to take any info from the car.

That ship has sailed. They own the software.

Lamborghini's EULA says if you want to use it, they get whatever they want. You can't select the parts, it's all or none. Oh you had a warranty claim? Well our data shows.......

Ok, so that means everyone has to do that? I'm wishing for updates, so I'm also wishing for them to honor my privacy requests. Apple does a decent job of this. I see no reason McLaren couldn't do the same.

You guys are probably right that they may not. But don't ask, dont get.
