Technically dealers can't take deposits until McLaren announces the car. Q1 2023 deposit/order time. Q2-3 production. Q4 first deliveries. Coupe & spiders same time. You heard it here from Carnac the Magnificent.
Clearly you missed the days when corporate announced models like the 675LT “There will be 500 global units world wide… and the model is already sold out. 675 spider, senna, speedtail, 765, 765 and solos. Granted… the “LCI” rumored 750 will not be a numbered car that will be announced ‘sold out’ but dealer lists are real and believe me long.

The "sold out" thing is easy...dealers are the actual customer for McLaren (and all brands etc.) so all that really needs to happen is for dealers to verify they have buyers for X allocations and they are all spoken for. No need to have a deposit for each, just a sense that all allocations will be spoken for. On a numbered car that's super easy since a dealer will know how many cars and how many buyers. For a "short" run car like the 750s I'd imagine they could say the same but they simply don't know how many they'll receive or when they'll end production so harder to guarantee all allocations are spoken for.

I had a friend back when I was living on LI who had an AmEx Black card. He threw it down on the table one night to pay for dinner and I couldn’t believe the heft behind it.

mclaren has only said the 750 is sold out through 2024, which depending on the start of production timing, might really just be a year. So, yeah, the cynical take is all the dealerships have agreed to take their full allocation allotment for the first year. Which is saying almost nothing.
