Fluid Buildup on Top of Transmission – Breather Valve Issue?

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with my McLaren 720S and was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or insights on how to resolve it.

There’s fluid buildup on top of the transmission, specifically on the right side when standing directly behind the car. I’ve cleaned it up multiple times and even used a vacuum to suck up the fluids. However, after going for a drive, the fluid reappears in the same spot.

I suspect it might be a breather valve issue, but I’m unable to confirm since the buildup only occurs after driving. Tracing the source has been challenging.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? Could it indeed be related to the breather valve, or should I be looking at something else? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Could be just that the DCT clutch has been over filled. My 650S had this issue from the factory, the updated manual now says to use less fluid. I'd have no idea if this is an issue with the 720S though.

Do you know if the DCT fluid has been changed at some point?

Also, what does the oil smell like? If it has a sulpher smell then it's from the transmission. If not then it's the clutch or less likely engine oil.

Covered up the breather valve with a little towel and aluminum foil. Towel was dry after going on 15 mile drive but still got buildup on top of the transmission case. Any other sources were this could be coming from?

Normal condition. When the fluid gets really hot it expands and comes out of the breather which is the main reason its there.

You dont want to cover the breather, its there for a reason. Its coming the breather still. it will eventually stop when the fluid level goes down, its really nothing to be concerned about

Yes there are 2 on a 720s. one for the clutch which is closest to the engine, the other for the gear oil.

Could be a slight leak from many places the picture you provided isn't the best so its hard to get an idea of where that pool is sitting. But upon looking at another photo red is the red pool of fluid and yellow is most likely where its coming from...

Either way i wouldnt worry to much about it its going to happen on most cars... Dont stress

Yeah we found the same photo lol. As I said... take a look at my picture but I really wouldnt worry about it, worry when its coming from the valve block or underneath

Thats minor, has the gearbox been serviced recently? If so clutch probably overfilled

I understand that, why would fluid be building up on top of the trans if it’s the clutch fluid and if so, where is it coming from in that area. I’ve cleaned that area drove it checked and fluids get built up on top again.

Because as the gearbox gets hot the fluid expands and the pressure in the box needs to be relieved, and this is the way it does it via the breathers. There are two parts to the gearbox, the clutch section and the gear section each with different oils, the clutch section is always doing most of the work in simple terms.

the clutch breather is actually in the vicinity of where your leak is, it will eventually stop. Has the clutch fluid been changed recently?
