First Ride with an Owner

Well I've been dithering about the changes to Volcanic Orange and if I should spec it so I contacted Andy and he said come along and take a look, no problem.

Andy has VO with lightweight wheels, carbon and alcantara/leather, standard brakes and carbon finish to the two engine covers. Top spec.

Plus he has had the paint polished in hi-tech unobtainium wax that sheds the dirt and looks a million dollars.

So he said ' shall we go fro a spin? ' Wow what a drive. What a car.

Some background- we are both die-hard 911 drivers but Andy has a tricked up Turbo with engine mods. I have had two test drives in different MP12's, one standard brakes and one CB's.

Being with an owner who has covered some miles and well on his way to adapting and mastering the car makes all the difference. What a car!

Andy gave it some stick on roads he well knows and the traction combined with the drive is sensational, time and time again the car catapulted out of bends and Andy would say 'that's 15mph or 25 mph faster than the 911'

He was so confident with the steering and totally relaxed that the car would turn when and where he expected. The steering is brilliant, a help, predictable, confidence inspiring.

The drive is relentless and is combined with a gearbox that has perfect ratios , a quick and smooth change unless in track and then it thumps you in the back as the catapult acquires extra elastication........bham, bham , bham through the gears as speed and horizon approaches at Warp Factor 10 Mr Sulu....

We encountered some damp road surface patches from a shower and the traction control kicked in but Andy was prepared as he booted the car back to warp speed......just brilliant traction.

You do get surprised at the speeds reached and thus the brakes can seem under pressure but when you reconsider the speed you simply have to adjust expectations.

Turbo lag, not an issue. Sports exhaust........well Andy has the standard and it communicates very well.......the Sports exhaust is very, very loud and I will go for the standard.

What a car. What performance. WHAT DRAMA.

Thank's Andy.

So if someone can write interesting, exciting and full of fun, then it's you, roundincircles:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

to Andy and the car: 1++++++++++++++
Heinrichhoernchen. You know this car is fun, especially if your into driving, and it's so bazaar that the UK press/journalists seem to conclude it's no more than ordinary. Bazaar/odd/inexplicable.

Perhaps they are Klingons. Yes that's it they are Klingons, devoid of emotion and just logical!
Good excuse for real world driving,as you say, what do the british press think they are talking about!Anyone in the area give me a ring, always great to drive with a fellow petrolhead.
Let us know your final spec

Oh I can't believe I'm about to say this, but - that would be the Vulcans who are all about logic.

The Klingons are the warrior guys with bad tempers.

So round, are you going to stick with the VO?

Sounds like fantastic ride ensued. Thanks for the update.

Your correct, but maybe my mistake was subconscious as the British press are trying to destroy the car:-0

Anyway the Star Trek is so appropriate as this car is from the future.....it's suspension, corner ability, traction ,air brake and steering change the game just like Starship Enterprise did.

Last night I was dreaming, whilst asleep, and was back in Andy's car but this time I was driving and Lieutenant Uhuru was the passenger. I glanced over, she was wearing the shortest skirt, and she looked back and said ' Roundincircles, warp factor 10'. The view thru' the screen went blurred, the car started to shake..........and my wife said wake up we have a lot to do today.......

VO is perfect for the car as it shows all the curve sand shrinks the area behind the B post and turning vains. It also look good in overcast light as well as being transformed in sun light.

The revised, production colour, VO is more classy as it has a burnt orange tone as against the bright tone of the original

It's very good and my wife say's it's the best colour but..........can I live with it over time?

The VR is sensational as well but maybe becomes too cherry/candy apple in overcast light

Tough call ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yes VO I think but I can see me tossing a coin next week when I have to spec.

sounds like it was coated in kryptonite! this was another gtechniq crystal lacquer detail. Great colour suits the car the volcanic red is also nice.

Yes,the finish is Gtechniq, which i would recommend to anyone,so easy to clean and no polish to apply, but the best thing about it is the brake dust just washes off and dosent stick
I went into the London showroom yesterday and they have a new Volcano Red car with red leather seat centres and doors with black leather dash and outer seats plus red stitch. It looks very trick along with lightweight wheels and black callipers.

VO or VR , decision time, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Go with the red, it will make my orange car that much rarer!
Apparently the most popular colours are VO and Maclaren Orange, the latter choice is the big surprise for Maclaren.

In the UK VO is THE CHOICE. It does match the car very well.

Not surprise that VO is popular. Orange is the iconic color for McLaren and i had expected it to be a popular color. Was considering other colors initially but end up with selecting Orange. I think it will look fantastic.
Not totally sure about orange as a long term ownership option.

The mclaren orange demo car attracted a LOT of attention on the test drive.

How do you find parking it up - I just imaging it'll constantly draw a crowd.

Spot on about the speeds being quicker than the 911, there is no way i could stay with the MP4 in my GT3!
I've ordered MO after much deliberation (between VO and MO). I think it looks fantastic with stealth wheels and the carbon wing mirrors (and vanes though I haven't specced these for budgetary reasons..). It will draw more attention but I think how it looks coupled with the heritage of the colour makes it the right choice for me.
