Driving to Algarve

Hi All,

Every Summer I go to the Algarve with the wife and kids and we always go with another family. My MP12 is due end of next month and we thought that the Dad's might drive to the Algarve this year instead of Easyjet with the kids....

Has anyone else tried driving down to the Algarve? Is it worth the effort? Any suggestions on routes etc?

Many thanks

Chris

You wont have a problem Chris,it all depends on what the other guys drive,i wouldnt want to go that far in any other supercar, but that could be my age and back that are the deciding factors.:)

Chris, done it many times but always through Spain after getting the ferry to Santander. The roads, lack of traffic, lorries and Police are great. We always stop overnight twice as we go the circuitous way. You can blast there in one go from Santander with two drivers and using the motorway but you would miss some brilliant roads and scenery.

If you look at bestbikingroads.com or the green roads on Michelin maps it is a good guide. Let me know if you want some tips.

Going down through Portugal is less fun due to traffic and Police but it is an option if you want to play dodgems.
I have done it a couple of times. Some great very lightly traffiiced roads across Northern Spain and then down into Portugal.

Overnight Ferry from Plymouth is best bet to get down to Spain.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll take a look at the biking website. Is there any particular road that is a must? Is there a prefered ferry option on the Santander route?

You definitely want to take the high speed ferry out of Plymouth. It is an overnight crossing. Also plot a rote that cuts across northern Spain. You want to stay north of Madrid and cross into Portugal around Guarda.
