This is not true about the Autel unit. I called Autel directly and asked them specifically which models would reset a McLaren service light. They had 2 models, both were about 2k new and another 4k/year for the subscription. You can't connect to a McLaren without the subscription as the unit has to talk to the server to check for various things. The guy made it really clear that their units (when it comes to high-end which is BMW+, they work always on non-premium vehicles) are meant for auto shops who are regularly using it to diagnose cars. Have you actually tried resetting the light with your unit? If it works, I'm sure everyone would like to know which unit you have etc.
The autel owner may be just resetting the oil light. I know the service reminder requires a better, high end system to reset.

I had contacted autel as well and specifically discussed the 909 model and they told me it would require an annual fee.

Well that is interesting! It would be great to not have to pay an annual fee for a car that is already covered by the functionality of the scan tool. I understand paying to upgrade the tool for new models. I wonder why the heck the guy told me it was more or less an expensive approach. You'd think he would have mentioned it if there was an option. I spoke to them in August of last year.

Here's his sig block:

The ms919 works fine and can program modules to the vin. The one thing I will say is that the "autel" store on Amazon is apparently not an authorized outlet so I did have to pay a bogus $500 fee when I had a warranty issue to get the unit "changed to a us spec". I like having a unit that will work on everything that has an obd as well as the built in oscilloscope/ wave gen/ multimeter. I have used it for tractors, trucks, cars and having wave form for audio tuning and duty cycle checks has been useful. I recently spoke to my local dealer head mechanic and he confirmed that he uses one of these systems as well for side jobs. If there is any particular function that anyone would like me to try out I'm happy to check.

Can you confirm: is there an annual fee to use?

Can it reset service light? Not the oil, but service interval. Thanks!

"Autel MaxiSys MS908S Pro II Diagnostic Scan Tool

Hello, and thank you for Contacting Autel,

Does this unit require you to be online to use? - No it does not, only when connecting a manufactures sever.

Does this unit require a yearly contract to use it beyond updating if one wants? - No, you can still use the tool to pick up and read codes. Renewals are needed to keep the tool up to date with software updates and to keep in under warranty.

Specifically want this unit to diagnose McLaren, which according to Autel vehicle coverage it has the make included. - Yes, if its on the coverage page it will support."

Response I received for my question, look like it works without a yearly fee.

I Use the Autel Maxisys Ultra tablet. I was under the impression if my software subscription expired that i would still be able to connect to all vehicles that came out prior to the last update. Once my subscription expired i was unable to connect to a 2016 570s for anything other then OBD DTC's. Figured maybe my software had corrupted or something so i opened a support ticket. I was then informed you have to have the active subscription to connect to these cars. This was about 4 months ago so im not sure if anything has changed. I have a shop so i didn't have a choice but to pay for the subscription.
I do know you can connect to most other vehicles without an active subscription but i figure because its an exotic car they figure they can get away with charging for it.

That's what Autel told me when I called about a tablet from them. It'll work on non-luxury cars, but to work on exotics you have to pay for the subscription. I'm also not sure what the Autel unit will do other than read/clear codes. It may reset the service reminder, but will it calibrate the various modules? When I did my annual a few weeks ago I spent time and went through each module and calibrated it (windows, airbrake etc.). Also not sure if the Autel will pair new keys like the DiagCode will. It seems DiagCode does everything MDS does, but pair a used key which I know MDS does.

Maybe @diagcode @Golden Motors can tell us what MDS does that their unit doesn't do?

It can reset the service reminder. You are able to actuate a lot of different components but I don't remember what exactly calibrations are available. I am sure it does not have the ability to pair keys.

This is what autel told me when I contacted them about their system. It only works for Mac when subscription is up to date.

You are absolutely right @Proflyer . Everyone can see all the functionalities on our updated site: www.diagcode.com

Of course keys can be programmed with our software. Here you can see a video made on a real car:

Was this a new virgin key or a used one that was previously programmed to another vehicle?
Especially in this case the key is new, unused.

People, please do not compare Diagcode to Autel, they are nothing alike, all autel mclaren does is read and clear codes and service reset for some models (also require subscription to work) I know because I own both. Diagcode does way way way more than Autel. Also, these days many tool makers have integrated subscription method as it keeps them going with tool development such as

1) rolling out new updates for newer car models.
2) increase tool functions(eg. flashing, reprogramming, lithium to lead acid conversion etc...
3) and more

Which Autel unit do you have DLvfe? You can go to their site and it lists all the functions by each model. Able to do a ton of useful things on a McLaren.

I think the Diagcode is far superior for sure but only does McLaren.

I have several other vehicles the Autel unit will diagnose and do advanced services with, for the McLaren it isnt vin specific and does most everything Id need. Anything more complex it would go to the dealer anyways.

To each their own for what they need.

I have MS909, quite useful on some brands like bmw and mercedes but with mclaren then not much really..
