Diagnostic Tools, Which one?

Hello Guys,
I am the owner of a 2016 570s.
I want to buy a diagnostic tool for normal operations (like a do on my C7 with HP Tuner) so basically something that reads all the DTCs, on all Modules not engine only.
Also Airbag, Cluster and so on seen that these cars are terribly delicate, and a battery drop can cause millions of errors.

Alternative MDS? I have seen people Using AUTEL instruments even to reset Airbag on McLarens and reading all the modules.

Another one is Diagcode, that does almost everything the MDS does, but to get a cheap one, you get a single VIN version, so you can work on a single car.

Do someone know which AUTEL version tools works on McLarens and does all the modules reading? Including airbag?

Without paying the yearly subscription what is the owner of the original software/hardward not allowed to use from the list of functions?

Any issue installing the software on a VM?

If it is simply updates and tech support that is fine but if it limits any of the software functions I would have a hard time as a 1-vin potential customer purchasing the software/hardware.

Current version of McLaren Diagnostic software include:
1 - Automatic model recognition
2 - Scan the available modules in the vehicle
3 - Connect and diagnose all available modules in the vehicle
4 - Reading the identification, software, hardware, serial numbers from the modules, reading identification number (VIN)
5 - Read and erase DTCs
6 - Detailed display of DTCs
7 - Read freeze frame data (faults recorded by time ,milage , speed , date , time etc )
8 - Actual values (dynamic real-time values of systems / sensors)
9 - Actuators (testing actuators such as window motors, lights, fans, injectors , seats etc )
10 - Reset service intervals/Guided Functions
11 - Activate/De-activate Transport Mode
12 - Activate/De-activate DYNO mode - 2WD/4WD
13 - Read and program VIN on modules
14 - Key Learning (Add key only)
15 - Reprogramming/Re-flashing of modules. All supported models so far can reflash these modules: ECU, BC, CRCM, DML, DMR, HVAC, SBC, TPMS, EPHS, EPB, SAS, PCCU, TCU, PDC (need to have Reflash Box hardware)

What will happen when the subscription is over? If your subscription expires, the software does not stop working. Functionalities 1 through 8 will continue to operate without any problems.

This applies to both the Single VIN & Unlimited VIN versions.

All software with an active subscription have automatic updates (after starting the software and connected to the Internet, the software will be upgraded to the latest version).

  • Subscribed customers will receive our updates regularly
  • Updates include the addition of new units, new functionalities and when possible new car models of this brand
  • Professional support, including a guide to solve a problem or to implement some special functionality
  • A tool with an expired subscription will not receive updates and the above benefits

So you lose the ability to reset the service light and adapt modules...ok ill keep looking. As other have said you are missing the mark here.

Fair enough, software looks very good. I need to reset my service light every year, can do that with an Autel unit that can diagnose a ton of issues as well.

My local dealer is fantastic to work with, I support them with anything bigger than simple service. Luck I have yet to need anything extra done on my car.

Autel is nice because it doesnt require yearly fees to use, can do tons of other vehicles, is a tablet which is easy to carry around and use.

Doesnt do what diagcode can do but does everything I need, anything more it can go to the dealer.

To be clear I am not shitting on diagcode, it looks great and Im sure really useful to someone looking to completely diy or even take to an independant tech for them to do it.

Are you sure autel doesn’t need a yearly subscription ?

Does this unit require a yearly contract to use it beyond updating if one wants? - No, you can still use the tool to pick up and read codes. Renewals are needed to keep the tool up to date with software updates and to keep in under warranty.

Specifically want this unit to diagnose McLaren, which according to Autel vehicle coverage it has the make included. - Yes, if its on the coverage page it will support."


Response I received for my question, look like it works without a yearly fee.

I Use the Autel Maxisys Ultra tablet. I was under the impression if my software subscription expired that i would still be able to connect to all vehicles that came out prior to the last update. Once my subscription expired i was unable to connect to a 2016 570s for anything other then OBD DTC's. Figured maybe my software had corrupted or something so i opened a support ticket. I was then informed you have to have the active subscription to connect to these cars. This was about 4 months ago so im not sure if anything has changed. I have a shop so i didn't have a choice but to pay for the subscription.
I do know you can connect to most other vehicles without an active subscription but i figure because its an exotic car they figure they can get away with charging for it.

People, please do not compare Diagcode to Autel, they are nothing alike, all autel mclaren does is read and clear codes and service reset for some models (also require subscription to work) I know because I own both. Diagcode does way way way more than Autel. Also, these days many tool makers have integrated subscription method as it keeps them going with tool development such as

1) rolling out new updates for newer car models.
2) increase tool functions(eg. flashing, reprogramming, lithium to lead acid conversion etc...
3) and more

Which Autel unit do you have DLvfe? You can go to their site and it lists all the functions by each model. Able to do a ton of useful things on a McLaren.

I think the Diagcode is far superior for sure but only does McLaren.

I have several other vehicles the Autel unit will diagnose and do advanced services with, for the McLaren it isnt vin specific and does most everything Id need. Anything more complex it would go to the dealer anyways.

To each their own for what they need.

I have MS909, quite useful on some brands like bmw and mercedes but with mclaren then not much really..

Without a doubt, you need a tool that does everything you need. And certainly the tools are like MDS or something close to it at least, but let's review the differences between this tool and Diagcode from experience.



First, can the MDS Offline tool do what you want? The answer is yes, but there are still many functions. You need to have an official McLaren account, otherwise you will not be able to complete the task. and no seller can give it to you for free whenever you need it.



Second, can the MDS Offline tool reprogram the controls and synchronize them with the program in the car...? The answer is no, and you will need an official paid account that enables you to reprogram online.



Third. What if you try to do something and the MDS Offline or Online tool fails? Can the seller give you an engineering solution to solve the problem with the factory? The answer is that no seller, even if he has a McLaren account, can do this work because it is limited to the exclusive agents of the McLaren brand around the world.



Fourth. Can the MDS offline or online tool program used controls and keys? Most of the time, no, and this violates the factory's work rules, and you are required to buy new parts from them.



These are almost the most important points that can come to my mind at the moment, and from them I say to all the respected gentlemen in this forum and outside it ..
