Dont know if this is news or already well known but at the Mclaren London drinks event last night they mentioned some stuff about customized cars

A. They mentioned that there are 5 customer cars shortly going to America with elongated fronts and with a GT style rear

B. They are working with one customer on a car with a totally customized exterior

Btw they had a car there with a lot of the new options - black roof, extra carbon, coloured carbon fibre

All I had done on my 12C soon to arrive in USA was diamond
cut wheels with flat gloss black paint-- in
addition to options offered in carbon etc.

They have said that under MSO you can do anything you want,if you have the money, and as long as they can justifly it doesnt effect the aero performance to much on the negative side
Welcome Doug :D They are very well behaved on here - sensible crowd:cool:
Traffic was bad so I couldn't get there on the way to the Chelsea game with my son.

Any pics of the extra options car?

These options are (of course) not cheap. The 'matt' paint-job is an extra 12k on top of your paint choice. I am tempted though by the carbon wing mirror stems which would work well with the carbon mirrors I've ordered - think they are 2-3k though iirc.
Beginning to make Ferrari look like a cheap alternative:rolleyes:

I would be very interested to see those cars !

How does the London dealer know whats going to the USA ?
The Special Ops people were at the London dealers last night and were open about what they were doing. Headcount is 38 in SO's so they need to be busy and or pricey.

They wear combat gear as Special Operations and deploy covertly in Woking. Customer centric they are.

Think Eric will be the first to get pics ot those:)
At the London Special Operations event yesterday it once again reminded me of the enthusiasm and dedication of the Mclaren employees, partners, associates, Ronettes or whatever they are called.

It's refreshing to deal with people who have genuine enthusiasm for all things Mclaren. They even have pride about doing things in double quick time when Ron gets involved, Ron's way I guess.

They talked about the ramp up of production in the new year and the opening of the MPC to visitors from Feb/March onwards. There was a confidence about the team that was not apparent a few weeks ago.

Are they still going to refuse American ctizens entry do you know:confused:
No, USA citizens welcome, but they will charge them entry fees.

That's what I was told - not cheap by all accounts
The car they had there had the orange carbon fibre on the sills

They were saying they can do the CF in any colour

They have done a silver car for the Middle East with all the rear CF in a matching silver colour

They also showed some pictures of a yellow car with yellow CF and all the interior (carpet, seats etc) in yellow

I spoke to McLaren before the MSO was officially announced about modifying the interior of my 12C. I got a number of renderings after a couple of months, but what they wanted for what appeared to be rather simple modifications was incredible. Even the dealer thought it was a no-go. I didn't even consider asking for exterior modifications more in line with the GT3. I would be very interested in finding out what these changes cost.
Well, if you are daft enough to mess with perfection, I'd probably charge you an arm and a leg, too!!

Just kidding. Sort of.

:)
Personalisation is very popular in some parts of the world - I saw a Japanese Ferrari with Levi (denim) seats. Not my taste but ho hum. Cost a fortune to spoil what would look great in leather or alcantara
Well, if customers are saying to McLaren "can I get something more like this, or like that" and then Frank is drawing up the design, then I think that is great. It's when Average Joe customer suddenly decides that he himself knows more about design than a professional - then things turn out rather unsavory. Why do aftermarket wheels almost never look good? Even though they may be great looking wheels as stand alone objects, they weren't designed along with the car as one cohesive idea.

The 12C is a very clean form and aero efficient. In my opinion if you start tacking bits on, trying to make a GT look, you might ruin it. That's why the exterior stuff is probably astronomically expensive - they would have to re-design the whole car just to re-model the front fenders, say. But like I said, if somebody asked me to re-model the interior (especially in denim), I'd take him to the cleaners, too. He obviously thinks he knows more about design than the pros and is willing to spend his cash to (try to) prove it. Easy money but not great for the brand in my opinion.
