Update: The 570 is now with a reputable SoCal 3rd party, and I’m praying the damage is limited.

Any update on what happened with your car?
It has been confirmed that coolant is dripping into cylinder 1. Next week, they will tear into the motor and get to the bottom of it. But per their early guesses, it appears to be a headgasket only. 🤞

My brother is a Kia mechanic, he was billing more hours than he was working within the first few months and he's not even good at it. They're doing engine swaps (happens a lot with Kia) in half of book time now. How well you beat book time depends on your ability to learn and your skillset, some take longer than others, but it definitely doesn't take years to become efficient.

As far as no techs driving around a McLaren, you're wrong on 2 counts. There are at least 2 people in this thread that are McLaren techs and McLaren owners (and one is over 50 and functions fine). His brake job mention is a perfect example because he's not even a tech at all, he's an owner who lets somebody else handle everything but brakes and wheel changes. The only reason he learned brakes and tires changes was out of necessity, and yet he is quite proficient at it because he has a good ability to learn and perfect a skillset. I think he's like me in that the 2nd or 3rd time you do something, you've got it pretty well perfected. Yes there are some other things you might lose on, but those electrical diagnostic jobs aren't losers because you're charging by the hour, not the job.
Ok so 2 techs out of how many thousands? Almost every tech I've ever known or worked with drove something that would just completely disappear in a Walmart parking lot. And I'm referring to techs that can flag an average of 80 hours a week no matter the work.

What you said were there weren't any and I named 2 in this thread. I don't know every tech, I don't know what they all drive, but more than the zero you claimed are already proven. The fact still remains techs bill more hours than they work and when the shop rate is $300/hr they're still making at least $100/hr and billing only 40 hours a week is still over $200k a year. That's enough to buy one.

I always love it when I can be on the opposite side of a good debate with my good friend (and sometimes business partner) Sean @EMF Audio (McMedics).

Yes, @Mikespeed6 did say " I dont get why you are so upset by how many hours a tech bills out every week because I can assure you no tech is driving around in a McLaren or a Ferrari "

Technically that is a false statement, because in fact Sean and myself are both McLaren focused technicians and we both own/drive a McLaren.... GOOD TIMES!!! :)

But..
It is also worth noting that even when the McLaren Dealer is charging 300.00 per hour, those Dealer technician's still do not earn 100.00 per hour (that is based on every conversation I've had with some of those techs) Most say they are lucky to get near 40.00 per hour income. Which is really not fair... in my opinion only.

Additionally, Please consider when an Independent shop "only" charges 100.00 or 150.00 per hour, They still have the cost of overhead: buildings/rent, equipment, insurance, non-producing staff, etc. so even the owners of those independent shop do not "keep" 100.00 per billable hour.

TO be really clear...
Sean @EMF Audio (McMedics) is currently a technician who works on McLarens (with passion for the brand and quite good at it as well!).

BUT...
Sean has been uber successful in OTHER business ventures before you bought your personal McLaren

FYI - Sean's other company manufactures some really top notch competition level car audio equipment (speakers and amplifiers). If you like that stuff send him a PM.

AND...
Myself included! I was very successful in real-estate lending and simultaneously owned an independent exotic and luxury automobile dealership for several decades (whew! how time flies). Those prior business ventures afforded me the ability to purchase multiple McLaren's (including my current McLaren) as well.

Basically Most full time Technician's are not making enough money they can run out and purchase any exotic car of their dreams. So @Mikespeed6 was trying to make a point, and it might be very valid, that normal mechanic income is not "usually" enough for Supercar money.

So for those few of us Technicians that are running around in Mclaren's makes us pretty rare indeed.

Which dealership do you operate? Always like shopping at dealerships run by enthusiasts and I would imagine your inventory is well-maintained.

My point of view comes from prior history with independent shops and branded mechanics based on percentage. The entry level techs make 20-25% of billable hours and the foreman making upwards of 40% of billable hours. My assumption is that translates to all levels of cars, which makes sense that an entry Kia mechanic making $20/hr (at 25%) could also make 25% at $300/hr ($75/hr). There is no incentive to make the same or barely more money at different marques.

I left the dealership world nearly 5 years ago. Me and my business partners did not agree with the direction of the dealership and I sold my shares. It was the right move for me, as I took the servicing and repair portion of the business with me and never looked back!

You have got to be the dumbest person I have ever met. You obviously can’t read, because that’s the farthest from what occured I have ever heard. Made money on them, lolololol omg that’s hilarious, I don’t think anyone has made money on the Mclaren brand. . Oh yes I tried to raise a stink about a car, yes that one that caught fire and burned down. Yes yes I did and I got paid in full from corporate for it. Seriously get your shit together. You are as dumb as the Mclaren brand itself

I didn’t buy a new Mclaren every three months. I bought one for myself, bought one for my best friend, burned, and replaced that with another one,

Listen when you have a brand new Mclaren catch fire, have leaks, and electrical problems brand new. It’s a problem and would be to you too. Brand new car with coolant leaks, not the only one, the coolant straps they use are shit, they expand and leak coolant. Brand new car with ac compressor leaks. A dealership that could not do a coolant leak pressure test correctly and returned the car with coolant still leaking as “ it’s not leaking”. The Mclaren brand is a shit show. That’s the hard truth and one day you will realize this, then only then will you fully understand the garbage Mclaren builds is just that,,,,, garbage!

I could make a living being a tow transport for Mclaren. Every driver that transports high end cars say the most problematic vehicle is Mclaren. They are constantly driving them to the dealer for the most mundane problems
