New to the forum, happy I found this community of McLaren enthusiasts.

Looking at purchasing a 720S and there are quite a few that are available out there. What should I be looking out for (i.e. questions to ask) when inquiring further about a particular car?

Also, read that McLaren offers a 3 year, unlimited mile warranty but what are the loopholes? Warranties are notorious, especially from dealers, for not covering certain things. Is the extended warranty worth it (from McLaren)? I read it's $4700 for 12 months? What is the cost for 24 months?

Planning to do some Novitec upgrades to the car - exhaust, turbo inlets, cat-replacement pipes, ECU tune etc. I'm assuming that affects the warranty?

What are the things I need to be aware of in the first year (or two) of owning a used 720S?

Appreciate any useful advice.

Thanks in advance.

At the best, you will void the powertrain cover, which is the majority of the value, IMO.

Removing the cats is illegal in all the US, although many get away with it. Consider who has more expertise - McLaren or small aftermarket companies, especially those selling off the shelf "tunes", and declining to take over the powertrain warranty.

If you do a quick search you will find all of your answers. Bottom line in regards to the warranty, if you plan to do mods plan on the warranty being voided. Lots of threads about different mods. Good luck.

All the mods you listed wll void the warranty, so there’s that.

As for what to look for, color and options are first and foremost. Documented service history would also be an extremely important thing.

Mileage is also important. Many people are under the false impression that low miles equals a good car, but with these cars it just isn’t necessarily true. You want a car that has had 1,500-2,000 per year put on it, that way most little gremlins have been dealt with.

Once you find a car you like that has a well documented service history, in a color scheme you like with the options you want, get the McMedics to do a proper PPI on it, and go from there.

Surely 720 is already plenty fast enough?

My personal view is that if warranty cover is financially important to you, then keeping it stock is key. You mod it, you break it, you pay for it.
same in both points. The warranty is there is save you a lot of headache. Unless it’s your forever car / business write off (literally as a YouTuber or sponsored track rat, you will professionally destroy it for fun and profit) then voiding the warranty ALSO destroys your resale value. I’d be shocked if it didn’t instantly vaporize about half the cars value.

At least try the dish as the Michelin star chef envisioned and prepared it before dumping salt all over it.

The 720s is a fantastic car. A true all time great. As others have said...I’d drive it as is before looking to mess with it. You will void your warranty. Which is fine if you’re dead set on the tune/exhaust...just put some (a lot) of money aside for if/when it breaks. Other than that...what a car!!! Seriously...amazing car.

Folks are not kidding about warranty. Mclaren has been great about honoring every issue I have ever had with my vehicle (Thank you McLaren and my local dealer!), but my professionally installed radar detector was enough to cause a headlight out to almost not be covered. Also, according to my dealer, even choosing tires that are a different spec than the original could cause warranty arguments later. So, if warranty is at all important to you, keep it bone stock.

If buying used, I agree with others to get one that has some miles on it, as that means the new car gremlins have already been taken care of. 5000 miles should be sufficient. Also, make sure the car has all the latest software updates for every single item that has software, as it seems to me that this matters a lot in terms of avoiding weird issues.

I will also underline what others said that the 720s is an amazing car. I don't know any car I would rather have for under $1m, except maybe the 765LT.

Is there a way to check if the car has ever been damaged or mechanical trouble/failure that's not reported on CarFAX? Since the car I'm looking at is out of warranty (recently) I want to be sure no big issue occurs under my ownership.

I'm planning to have McMedics do a full PPI on it. Thanks for all the advice.

My old black 720s is for sale at Chicago Motorcars with all of this done to it already. @Its_a_zach

I only sold it because I bought a 765LT
