Going to leave the details light. Brought car in for yearly deal. Something needs to be fixed, under warranty. My car is stuck at dealer waiting on this part which, according to the dealer, McLaren is unable to "source". Car may not be safe to drive w/o fix.

It has been weeks now. There is zero progress/update. "Part unsourcable." "No ETA."

Dealer has been good about communication.

Am curious if anyone else is having a similar issue? Dealer made a comment about this being a more general problem. At what point should I let myself get angry, and what good would it do? I am getting pretty frustrated.

Sounds like the part may be an electrical component. What exactly is the part? Without knowing that, who knows... Surely a mechanical component could even be found on a salvage or something.

I'd ask specifically what they need and see if you can just source it yourself and get McLaren to reimburse (although I doubt they'd warranty that repair and you'd be on your own if it fails again.)

As @noone2 said, it really depends on the part. Specifically:

• Can you source the part elsewhere?
• Is the same part available without McLaren branding?
• Is the labour required to replace it excessive? If not, a second-hand part could be used whilst waiting for a new one.

But This is exactly why you (and many other good technicians) have already left or are looking to leave the McLaren dealership environment.

Which is really sad in my opinion! It's a huge loss for a dealer to lose a technician with 5-10 yrs experience on a specific brand automobile. That is a life time of experience that the new guys will forever be missing.

Then the brand new technicians come in with good hands but no working experience with the normal issues all of us seasoned technicians have learned thru experience for years working on the same brand every day. (Not derogatory! I'm sure the new technicians know how to spin wrenches like the rest of us, just don't have the depth of experience)

We really do need to know what is the part!
B/c my problem with this is, IF it is not some chip or special electronic part, but rather than something mechanical, THEN McLaren HQ needs to get off the ass and make, manufacture or shit the part. I say this b/c we all know IF you throw enough $ at McLaren (Ferrari, etc.), their 'special operations' ("MSO") will shit a brick of CF for you. In a case like this, McLaren HQ should step up to the table IF at all possible.

SO WHAT'S THE PART?

(I'm also curious b/c I have a 10 year old 12C ... don't want this to become a common issue)

Ha - yes Kev had to be said, I bet there are some good techs out there in the dealers but I am sure they are few and far between. As I have been rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the McLaren business, I do have the right to say that. The dealers are really not McLaren, its a franchise, what else is franchised... MCDONALDS & Burger king, go figure.🍔🍟

This kind of thing happens sometimes and I imagine it will be more common in the future. I once worked on a Senna that sat for months at the dealer because I had to do a recall on it, however because it was a recall there were specific legal requirements with the exact parts used. In short Mclaren was out of a high temp zip tie needed and the manufacturer of the zip tie was shut down due to covid. No parts available with no ETA for months. Trust me the dealer wants your car gone just as much as you do. If the car is under warranty the dealers hands are tied.

It's a front strut. Is leaking oil (or whatever fluid is inside - so something is broken/compromised). Apparently McLaren cannot source struts. Hence my frustration.

Yeah I heard that they are hard to get at the moment. To be honest, they all weep to some degree a weep is ok, as long as it is not pissing fluid everywhere, you are normally fine. If it were me I would clean the area and monitor, but I guess thats just being smart lol.

There was a small pool of fluid (which looked like oil) under the car, so I am assuming that's more than weep?

They were available around this time last year. Mine had the same problem when the dealer bought the car and they replaced the strut. Hopefully it won't be too long.

As others have said, you could try a used one. Otherwise, it may be possible to get yours rebuilt.

Front struts are becoming a pretty common failure item. Seals fail and they leak.

The fluid is Green I am guessing? Most assisted shocks fail, ask a range rover owner/R8 magride.

It is not all that common on mclarens but it does happen, and the vast majority do weep from time to time especially when they have been left sitting. Normally a suspension work out changing the settings can help to get things sealing up again. I worked on a car that had a weep, cleaned it up and it didnt return
