If you are a prospective McLaren owner and know McLaren primarily for its Formula One history, by all means enlighten yourself by learning about their CAN-AM series exploits, as well. Sadly, this is the series that took Bruce McLaren's life, but there was never (and probably never will be) another series like it. A no-holds barred assault on speed through the use of massive horsepower (Porsche's 1200 HP 917 was the pinnacle), extreme light weight and the nascent evolution of racecar aerodynamics, CAN-AM stands alone as a motorsports spectacle. By the way, CAN-AM cars routinely bested the lap records of same-era Formula One cars.

I suggest the DVD titled "CAN-AM: A Speed Odyssey" (http://www.canamfilm.com), which has amazing footage and commentary. You'll recognize many faces, as all the top drivers showed up to drive these monsters on North America's most incredible racetracks. Also, you will gain a new appreciation, and respect, for McLaren Orange!

Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

You have not truly lived until you've seen these cars driven in anger. Laguna Seca Historics during Pebble Beach, (if CanAm is one of the featured classes that year), is one of the most amazing displays of power you can ever see.

They're apocalyptically cool.
