Personally I dig the Artura. I may buy one and stick it in Florida when they release the convertible.

Due to technical limitations/impracticality or business reasons?
Technical for balance reasons. 360°/8=45° so a multiple of 45 is needed. 360°/6=60° so a multiple of 60 is required.
Normally the V6 uses a balance shaft but clever engineering on the crankshaft has removed it on the 296GTB and Artura IIRC

The clever part in the 296 is in the engine mounts, not the crank. The 296 crank is less balanced than Artura, plus no balance shaft meaning the 296 has some nasty primary couples which are being at least somewhat absorbed by the mounts.

“The crankshaft in the 296 GTB is also a completely new component with its crank pins orientated at 120-degrees. The crankshaft is both forged and twisted with the objective of achieving 100 per cent balance of rotating masses and 25 per cent of alternate masses.”
The Artura's meanwhile is the exact same principle but with 50% balance of reciprocating masses balanced. The balance shaft then dealing with the forces from the remaining 50%
I’ll be quite curious to see how the Artura does stack up to the 296. If the 60-130 time is within a second it’s doing quite well. Half second it’s a no brainer which one to buy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Artura is very close to 720s times for 0-60

I’d wager quite a bit that the 720 replacement will be a hybrid v8 and it’ll be very impressive.

I think the Artura will match up quite nicely against the 296. It’s going to be a lot lighter I think and now that Ferrari has shown their hand I’m sure McLaren are paying attention because it’s big deal for them brand wise. I think the Artura will give a 720 a run for its money down low...perhaps up to 60mph. Instant torque and probably much improved launch control will make it a monster down low.

I could be wrong but I still think McLaren are sticking to the ethos of ‘We are not in a HP war, but rather a weight war.’ AWD/4WD makes that very hard. I don’t know how they’ll put 1000++hp to the ground in the P1 replacement but I have a feeling it’ll be 2wd. We’ll see...They are a road racing company after all...not an NHRA drag team. I know stats sell...but on track weight matters more.

The bigger question is when does all this fun stop? The performance envelopes we are seeing are truly insane...way too much for the average consumer to handle.

Hopefully it ends with some sort of “graduated licensing” program or something along those lines, where in order to buy/drive a 900+HP vehicle you have to have a certain endorsement on your license.

there is zero chance of a graduated licensing in a bipolar America that is half Puritanism and half libertarianism. Never ever happen. Your neighbors would much more enjoy taking your fun away

488 pista 720 bhp, 765LT...

sure mclaren has never been in the BHP war...AND some of the Ferrari numbers might have been optimistic while the mclaren ones were conservative.. ;)

The only time you are driving a McLaren to the limits where weight matters in regards to your acceleration, cornering and braking is at a track. A few hundred pounds will not make these a worse street car.

lets agree to disagree on that one. Sure you can hide a lot of weight with more power but you cant escape physics.
try driving a Tesla aggressively on a curvy road... truly horrible experience. only question which one will giveup first, the car or you? only car that has managed to make me car sick while driving.
road safety, stopping distance
fuel economy and environment....

Mclarens are great, still the lightest super cars out there.
my latest road car weighs 900kgs and has 200bhp

Oh I am fully aware of that. I was on a council to introduce graduated licensing for motorcycles a while back. The biggest reason the US doesn’t have graduated licensing is due to Harley Davidson. Their biggest customer is a mid-40’s male who has never ridden a motorcycle before, and if there was graduated licensing they would lose all of that business. And that is one of the reasons people keep getting killed on 180+HP street bikes, all thanks to HD.

Disagree. I can feel an immediate difference when a 200 pound buddy is in the passenger seat, even at normal road speeds.

Despite the extra grip I find it feels odd to try and flick my turbo S around after driving the Mclaren. The Mclaren feels so nimble. It responds fluidly and immediately to every input. In the Turbo S, too quick of adjustments in turn in or throttle are followed by a lagging and perceptible snapping feeling as the extra weight transfers.
