Android controls the Infotainment space in Automotive (not cell phones) today. Most OEMs do not run proprietary Infotainment stacks any more. Re the safety features (PRNDL etc) these are mostly ASIL certified and run outside of the Infotainment stack.

This is exactly the sort of reason why I've never owned an Apple product, and never will. They're a monopoly with proprietary software.

The irony is that back in the 90's Apple sold against Windows based systems claiming they were proprietary.
