I had a question about this. Say someone has a relationship with one Mac dealer. Then they move across the country, but want to deal with the same Mac dealer. Would that be an issue?
Car buying and specifically supercar buying is not a frequent thing for most people. It is understandable that people do not know the in's and out's of how things work and why they work the way they do and the implications to people for future purposes.
Car dealers can sell anywhere. However, dealers will tell you that the substantial amount of money they make is in the "back end" money that manufactures hold back to make sure that dealers are doing what they are supposed to be doing, in accordance with franchise agreements, etc.
One of those things in the back end money is selling new cars into that particular dealer's jurisdiction.
Mclaren and Ferrari are very strict with this. Aston Martin doesn't care and Lambo (from memory), requires that 50% of the sales have to be in the dealer jursidiction. If the dealers don't play ball, then they lose the back end money and possibly allocations (i am aware of one dealer who has received re-allocated cars to them from a different dealer who was being "naughty".
McLaren has been growing with the # of dealers in USA over the last few years. The dealers did NOT respect other dealer jurisdiction. Under performing dealers would heavily discount cars and sell into other dealers jurisdiction. This created a constant "discounting of cars" and screwing the entire McLaren "car value". They have taken steps to ensure that dealers do not do this anymore and they should nurture their own home market. This is in fact, the best thing for all of us.
Each dealer is an independent business. What one is doing has nothing to do with what a different one is doing. Charlotte may be charging $100K adm for people who wouldn't make their cut, and they may have set aside an allocation or two for people to leapfrog over others who may have more of a buying history (all dealers have CRM's that show profitability by customer - profit on sales of cars, servicing, add - on's, etc.).
To answer your specific question:
If you lived in a certain dealer jurisdiction and purchased cars from the local mclaren dealer, then they won't incur penalties by selling to you if you move into another jurisdiction (however, they like the entire suite of services, such as servicing and they would lose that in this type of scenario and they may not want to sell to you anymore).
If you did not have a dealer in your area and bought from a different dealer and now there is a dealer in your jurisdiction, then the dealer that you purchased from can still sell to you without penalty.
A big mistake that people make is that when they are looking to buy a car (used), then they buy from anywhere... However, this is a hobby and it is not a one and done type of thing. You will continue to buy. You will get stuck when you want to buy a new car and the other dealer that you bought from, won't sell to you and you are at the bottom of the pile at your local dealer.
fwiw; I do know many people who have inquired about 750 from their local dealer but were not going to make the cut. They bought a car or other cars to move up the line...
