720s spider - proper battery trickle charger method?

655 Views 24 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  EMF Audio (McMedics)
I just want to make sure i am doing this correctly, while i try to isolate my electrical gremlins!

Is it better to:
  • 'wake up the car' by opening the drivers door
  • press the frunk button
  • plug in the charger
  • close the frunk
  • close the drivers door
  • press the lock on the key fob
  • wait for the long beep to stop

OR
  • open the frunk with the key fob
  • plug in the charger
  • close the frunk
  • press the lock button on the key fob
  • headlights go out, but no long beep

Do both methods activate the frunk lock, while charging?

Thx

Not sure that it matters. I get out, lock the car, open the frunk with the button, plug it in, and don't close the frunk.

Does opening the trunk activate any interior/exterior lighting?

I don't think so but I don't remember for sure. Doing it this way stops the warning sounding.

Have you checked the battery voltage?
No, but after charging for a full day on Tuesday, when i drove the car yesterday, it said the battery was 77%, but after one hour, it was back to 100% ~ weird!

My car is virtually always 100%, because i drive it a lot!

I need to close the frunk, as the car is outside, in the driveway!

Its Florida, open frunk = pool

Does the 720 have a battery panel? If so, it's really easy to get to it. I wouldn't rely on what the BMS is saying. Fluctuating voltage is a sign that it's bad. Mine would charge, but only hold it for a few minutes before dropping to 3V.

I have no idea, where would it be?

I wish the car had an easy access panel for the battery!

It's in the frunk, on the far wall, where the charging port is. I think the 720 has it, same as the 570, earlier models don't so you have to remove the frunk liner. It just has a couple of plastic lugs that turn, you pull it off and the battery is right in front of you.

They typically go up by 1% of every minute of driving. The BMS isn't always reporting correctly. One time in my 12C I opened the door and it said full charge, went to start it and it was clearly quite low. I shut the car off and back on, showing ~35%.

You are correct.

As soon as the trunk is closed (pressed down), it is locked. The trunk does not have a separate locking mechanism (electronic central locking) like the driver's door, for example, because the trunk can only be opened electronically either way (key or button in the interior) or the emergency release. As far as I know, the central locking only goes to the two doors and the fuel filler cap, but not to the trunk. So seen you should be safe as soon as the trunk locks by pressing down.

The manual release for the lock is separate, sorta, but you are correct in that there isn't a common link between arming (not to be confused with locking) and keeping the frunk lid latched. It's worth noting, these cars never lock mechanically (except the fuel door). They latch and "lock" is electronically limiting the command to unlatch.
I look forward to a charging port on the '720s hybrid', so i won't have to open a frunk.
Open the frunk anyway you want with car locked or unlocked.
Plug in the charger.
Hood can then be latched or unlatched.
Car can then be left unlocked or locked with a beep.

On a side note regarding the frunk, I was fooling around with my friends this weekend and I got in my frunk to show them how big it is and realized I don't have an emergency release inside the frunk like I thought all cars were mandated. Were front trunks excluded in this law??

No. Does yours have one? Mine is a MY2020.
