Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing a 720S that's coming out of warranty period. I'm not too concerned, as long as defective parts are all replaced and a PPI comes out clean. I'm a DIY guy and can handle most maintenance and basic component replacemnts. Here are my questions:

1. Can OEM McLaren parts be purchased by owners for DIY work? (oil filters, cabin filters, seals, hoses, starter, replacement interior parts, etc) Any online sellers?
2. Are suspension accummulators wear & tear items? I'm seeing many are replaced at under 5k miles.
3. What about future software updates when out of warranty?

For deux, accumulators go bad after ~15k miles maybe less, not covered under extended warranty contracts.

I will try and throw in a few answers:

There are a few independent service shops popping up to service Mclarens, not many but a few. You can certainly do it yourself. There are parts available and you can order through McLaren (through a dealer). Since most are still under warranty, this hasn't been discussed a lot as of yet. But doable for basics.

Interior wise, not much to report. There have been some minor things like door sill rubber, finder well plastic coming dislodged, and other minor stuff. All that stuff if out of warranty is probably not a hard DIY.

Software updates are probably only dealer installs (doubt independents will have access)- and they will charge for labor if ever needed (outside of warranty).

The problem with any modern car, if you do not have the proper diagnostics - likely outside the basics DYI stuff, you will be looking at using a Dealer service or Independent that have the diagnostics.

General consensus throughout the posts, the aftermarket warranty you can buy, does not cover most of the things that are likely to go wrong/things that have been reported to go wrong. So either DIY or finding a good independent will be key - or utilize a good dealer service for most things.

The other thing not mentioned that I will do once my warranty ends is replace the turbo inlets with Pure Turbos inlets (Already bought mine, as my warranty ends in about 1 year - just waiting on last warranty service to install). This has been a huge fail point, and potentially most costly if they fail. (see threads on this). Simple fix, but worth it once warranty is out.

Outside of Porsches CPO warranty which is terrific, most others are not good. I utilize the 4-5K per year as a reserve and figure what I save on the warranty, I will hold in case of repair. For the most part that has worked out (minus my last ferrari).

The biggest challenge is info. The McLaren service info is all online, and subscriptions are prohibitively expensive. You can pay a daily rate, but it's still not cheap.

And you really need that info. There are often steps that are not intuitively obvious. For example, try and take apart a door w/o breaking anything. I've done it, but the service info was critical.

The other challenge is the McLaren Diagnostic System is required to diagnose/service/program many of the systems on the car. Those are also prohibitively expensive. Aftermarket systems are slowly coming online with some of the functionality, but nowhere near all of it.
