P18

What does anyone know about the P18?

And what’s happened to the P16 & P17?

He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

PS - nothing I say should be taken seriously but I am lucky enough to live in Woking and do get to see a lot of McLarens

If I remember right P16 is the replacement for P13 and P17 replaces P14... P18... I dunno, stands to reason it could be an Ultimate Series thing, but it could also be the pickup truck and / or a wagon.

P18 is something someone I met has seen, fairly certain it’s not a pick up truck...

Anyone know what each project name represents? I'm pretty sure I got all these wrong except for P14.
P10 = mp4-12C?
P11 = 650s?
P12 = P1?
P13 = 675lt?
P14 = 720S
P15 = next hyper car

Maybe SUV? Wait they said no SUV, maybe 4 door or 2 door with a useable back seat.

It might be an all electric ultimate car. Just a guess.

And for the sake of completeness:

  • F1=McLaren's first "Bespoke Project"
  • X-1=A one-off bespoke car McLaren showed at Pebble Beach in 2012
  • BP23=McLaren's second Bespoke Project (hence the "BP2") and with 3 seats (hence the trailing "3"; they didn't call the F1 "BP13" when they did the F1 though). This is the so called "Hyper-GT".

I think the F1 is P1 and then the SLR is like P8. The rest are various projects that never made it. There's a thread on it somewhere.

If it's something like McLaren's version of the Ferrari FF (or whatever it's called now) I'd be more than OK with that.

I'm just guessing and I don't want to get New Britain upset discussing the lowly SUV.

Flewitt did say that there were no plans for an SUV but did not exclude a car with a second row of seats. I'm just not sure of his exact words. I did see a concept drawing of a future FF car in Italy about 2 years ago I believe. The drivers side had a large gullwing door that gave access to the second row of seats. I could see McLaren doing this if the numbers work for them. A family transport model that can remain the same for five or six years with only minor updates. Just look at what Porsche did so long ago in this area. Maybe not now but within a few years with electric advances it may be a consideration. Didn't McLaren use the excuse of customer demand for making the 675LT spider?

...pulling from the past to fuel the future...

BP1 was X-1 one off car
F1 was just P1

Well... I don't think they've used the (literal) "BP" designation prior to the BP23, so it's not like the naming is consistent and backwards-compatible.

For what it's worth, McLaren's own press release for the BP23 says that the "BP2" part of the codename stands for "Bespoke Project #2", and also says that the first such project was the F1:

https://latest.mclaren.com/posts/com...n-the-hyper-gt

That's why I said in my earlier post that McLaren didn't call the F1 "BP13" (Bespoke Project #1, 3 Seats), even though they now think of the F1 as their first Bespoke Project, even though it was their first roadcar project (P1).

Having said all that... it's just a name :-)

Sorry, First time I've seen anything suggest the F1 was a bespoke project. The guys at MSO said to me the first one was X-1 which is a bespoke project, the F1 was a production car... but it's just a name I suppose.
A West likes this.
