One Lap of America 2019

It's been called the "motorsport vacation of a lifetime" and "summer camp for car people".

8 tracks in 8 days
3500 highway miles in-between (6-8 hour drive each night)
one set of tires
no limits on car prep
no support vehicles

It is the spiritual heir to the original Cannonballs that Brock Yates organized and wrote about in Car & Driver magazine. The distance is the same as the cross-country trip, but the high speed aspects are now held only on tracks, in a time trial format. Thrown in for good measure are typically an autocross, drags, skid pad, and sometimes a circle track.

The route always starts/ends at the Tire Rack in South Bend, IN, as they are the primary sponsor, but the rest of the route varies. This year is primarily in the Midwest, with the track list including Nelson Ledges, Brainerd, Road America, Hastings, Blackhawk Farms and NCM. The Tire Rack test track is used for both wet and dry skid pad contests...autocross is at Grissom AFB and drags are at Brainerd. Event info here: http://www.OneLapofAmerica.com

My wife and I have run this event for the past nine years, finishing in the top ten overall eight times. We enter on behalf of the presenting sponsor, Grassroots Motorsports Magazine, where I am a regular contributor.

In recent years, we've run our 12C and 570S...finishing 2nd Overall last year, and first in class. This year, we are running our new 720S that we recently bought from Chris Blank at McLaren Beverley Hills. Should be an epic trip.

I'm curious how large is "big" for the front tires and for the back tires.

One Lap of America sounds like a blast!

Be careful with the wheels. I remember bigger wheels/tires ended up causing damage to 12Cs because under compression they rubbed hard against the wheel well liners.

19x10 with a 275/30-19 & 20x12 with 305/30-20

We have to run 200tw or higher, and given the typical mix of dry and wet, the Michelin PS4S is the tire of choice. The rear tire is the N0-spec version designed for the rear of the GT3 and Carrera GTS. It's a half inch wider tread width than the standard 305.

With the soft sidewalls of a street tire (as opposed to something super-stiff like a Hoosier), going wider on the wheel width makes way more of a performance difference than stuffing a wider tire on the same rim.

Well aware...we ran a 12C a couple years ago. The liners in the 720S have more clearance and are of a material that is more rigid...won't sag when wet like those in the 12C.

I've always wanted to do this...sounds like an epic event! Be sure to keep us in the loop. A 720 with big honkin tires sounds like the perfect set up for an overall win.

I ran that tire on my 991.1 GT3. It was a big mistake and I took them off. Way to hard a compound for the track. Street okay.

Stormy day? Take it to the track! Upper mid-west route this year means it will likely be wet for some of it.

Michelin PS4S are amazing in these conditions, though only 4/32nds tread left on the rears makes it a little dicey in the deep spots.

Pretty sure this is the first time this car has ever been in the rain. When I bought it, you could eat off the underside.

Yes. And Stock GT.

There's some stout competition at the pointy end. Favorites have to be Lewis/Thorne, both previous winners, teaming up in the four-peat winning GTR of Catesby Jones. And then there's IMSA pro racer Eric Curran driving a 2019 ZR1 with Steve Loudin. And a few other ex-pro teams (e.g. Holland/Altenburg).
