Have you driven a CGT?

Interesting, I would have thought the power delivery and great brakes on the CGT would have given it an edge over the auto box and on/off brakes set up on the SLR

Not sure, but I'm pretty sure there are road legal drag tyres which can do those kind of speeds. Could be wrong though...

Treads might be a bit of an issue.

I think the "where" is at least as big a question as the tires. Bonneville? What tires to they run on the salt? ...I'm thinking that's really the only real answer - unless someone knows of a sufficiently long (and high quality) hunk of asphalt which could be closed for the attempt...

Because McLaren.

I would agree to with you to a point. But i look at the two cars as totally different animals. I see the Porsche as going right after the Enzo, I look at the SLR as the ultimate road coupe. More of a super 612 than an all out racer.
If you have driven an SLR in anger, the power delivery of anything else save a veryon feels weak. It has so much torque all the time it is stupid. As bad as the brakes "feel" they have the ultimate stopping power of anything i have ever driven. The SBC system, as soulless as it is can stop a car faster than you would think physically possible. I remember back in 06 doing brake tests in SLR's showing clients the potential, we where performing 100% ABS activation stops from about 120 mph to zero. I did it so many times i actually got a head ache and blurred vision. A Dr told me its because my brain was being forced against the front of my skull too hard, too many times. Needless to say i don't do that anymore and have ultimate respect for the car.
One of my clients owns a club here in the states, where you can rent various exotics, and do various days out with them. One of the days is the "200mph day" one of their SLR's has been over 200 mph more than 400 times, has over 65,000 miles on it and still purrs like a kitten. The 599 in comparison is on its 3rd engine, 2nd transmission, 5th clutch and has about 35k on the clock. The SLR is the only car that can routinely go over 200 mph regardless of the wind conditions, stop, turn around drive the owner back, then sit there ticking over waiting for more.......I LOVE THE SLR.....

Well you have me sold on at least going back and looking at a SLR seriously again. Might make for a very reasonable exotic DD.

Two very different cars. The carrera gt is the ultimate drivers car,imo it is the closest car to the mclaren f1 you can buy(both na, carbon tub, rwd ,manual gearbox and both over 600 hp)
Slr is more of a luxury cruiser. Both are crazy fast but for me nothing beats rowing through the gears of the porsche. Also the v10 makes one of the best sounds in the world

You cant argue with that statement !! But the car just does for do it for me, i understand the joy of rowing through the gears in a 250 SWB comp car, but in a modern road car, i don't get it ! had the CGT gone racing as was originally intended, does anyone think it would have been a manual ?
If flappy paddle gearboxes are good enough for senna, alonso, Hamilton, vettal et all then its good enough for me !!
SLR for me all week long and twice on Sundays

Thought is a very underestimated process

Having been out on the track with a couple, a well driven Carrera GT is a seriously quick car.

The thing is modern super cars have lost that connection with the driver. It not like im gonna be racing the car 24/7 for me to care about the 0.xx difference in shift times.

For me its all about the driving experience. Dont get me wrong the slr is an amazing piece of machinery, but the carrera gt puts the bigger smile on my face when i drive it. All week long and when the weather is good i prefer topless

Could not agree more which is why the F40 and F50 are more personally appealing than the Enzo. A friend test drove one recently and I think nailed it in his summary:
