1996 McLaren F1 GTR

I recorded this in August and thought some of you might enjoy it.
Factory BMW driver & racing legend Bill Auberlen tearing up Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in a BMW-powered 1996 McLaren F1 GTR.

Very nice capture - thanks for sharing it with myself and the 70+ other people who clicked on this thread but didn't offer any response.

Appears that you were lucky to see it prior to Auberlen literally tearing up the car with an off-track excursion in Turn 1 sometime on Thursday. Hopefully they get it back to MSO Heritage for some proper repairs as the clear tape that was holding much of the bodywork together when I saw the car on Friday and Sunday were unbecoming of the prestige of a McLaren F1.

This is GTR 17R which raced twice in 1996 - once at Silverstone in the 4 Hour BPR Global GT event finishing in 4th and then again at the 24 Hours of Le Mans where it finished 8th overall. It has remained with BMW USA since new and is part of their Motorsport Heritage collection. Prior to the incident at Laguna most of its visible scars were original as it has never been restored.

I lucked out, was in the Mazda press box using their wifi and heard a heavenly sound outside so I ran as fast as I could to see the tail end of the car going down the straight. Waited and sure enough he made two more passes. I then became too busy with our cars we were racing so I missed all of that, what a shame to hear!!!! That car was so beautiful.
