How much did it cost?

I've had that so many times I've never had anything that I felt comfortable saying. After owning 4 Corvette's, 6 Ferrari's, 3 Porsche's, 1 Lamborghini and the 12C, I finally said something to that question yesterday after my wife and I had lunch in Carmel. Fellow standing next to my car asked "the" question. I finally just said, "Google it". Worked for me yesterday.

At some point, you resort to answers like these...

"How fast does it go"

250 MPH

"How much does it cost"

A million dollars.

"What is it...Lambo?

Yep...full custom. Even the emblems are custom.

LMAO!!! That's my new saying!

Sometimes they ask "what do you do for a living?"

So I pause a second, look around to see if anyone can hear us, like I'm about to reveal a big secret... and then I say "I invented the + sign".

Then just hop in the car and watch them puzzle over it as your driving away in your "full custom Lambo"! LOL

Of the various comments about driving a McLaren that I have received, the oddest was when I was asked at a fuel station, "How much does it cost to fill that up?"
All I could say was, "About the same as when you fill your car up."

I think it was zombie's (I think he was the guy that said it) answer I like the most - "about $100 a pound" it forces them to go to the Internet and do some research on the car!

My answer is simple "Enough."

Usually the people who directly ask me that question right out of the box, that's my answer.

If I have time, and you stand there with me and shoot the shit and are a genuine car guy by wanting to know more about the car and what it is, then I'll usually give more of a straightforward answer if asked. But usually those type of people don't even ask, because they don't care. They appreciate the opportunity to talk to an owner and see the car first hand.

I have a friend who owned an R8 and truly has a skill for coming up with silly answers to questions like this. My personal favorite was...

GasStation Joe: Woah! Is that the engine in the back of the car!?

R8 owner: WHAT!? HOW'D IT GET BACK THERE AGAIN????!!!

"Too much" is my answer.

It's such a pointless question.

I was at a DE yesterday at COTA, and was giving rides to paying customers (which allows me to go out for more sessions)...first thing out of the mouth of one of them...while we were on track was...

How much did this cost?

I chuckled and thought of this thread.

As a long time Bugatti owner (Ettore period!) I am very used to this type of questions. I usually ask: Can you keep a secret? You can guess what the answer is to which I reply: me too!

I get this frequently when sitting at stop lights with the windows down. Usually it is phrased like "That car is like a million bucks, right?" I usually just smile and say, "Naw, I got a really good deal." I rarely ever give a number...if they are that curious, Google has the answer.

I instructed his friend Scott, who was driving Joe's car.

Hats off to Joe for putting a friend into a supercar which he had never driven before...on a track he had never driven before. In fact, Scott had never really driven *any* track before. He had no problem wringing that car out on the long straights, and by the end of the day we had him clicking off respectable lap times and playing nice with others on track.

Good times.
