Brock Yates' One Lap of America 2016

It's been called the "motorsport vacation of a lifetime" and "summer camp for car people".

8 tracks in 8 days
3500 highway miles in-between (6-8 hour drive each night)
one set of tires
no limits on car prep
no support vehicles

It is the spiritual heir to the original Cannonballs that Yates organized and wrote about in Car & Driver magazine. The distance is the same as the cross-country trip, but the high speed aspects are now held only on tracks, in a time trial format. Thrown in for good measure are typically an autocross, drags, skid pad, and sometimes a circle track.

The route always starts/ends at the Tire Rack in South Bend, IN, as they are the primary sponsor, but the rest of the route varies. This year is primarily in the northeast and upper Midwest, with the track list including Pittrace, Palmer, Summit Point, National Corvette Museum, Road America, and Autobahn. The Tire Rack test track is used for both wet and dry skid pad contests. Event info here: http://www.OneLapofAmerica.com

My wife and I have run this event for the past seven years, finishing in the top ten overall six times. We enter on behalf of the presenting sponsor, Grassroots Motorsports Magazine, where I am a regular contributor.

This year, we are running our new-to-us 2012 12C that we recently bought from forum member Snowhorn (Josh). Should be an epic trip.

I'll try to keep this thread updated, but to follow all the action as it happens, go to http://www.facebook.com/OneLapMcLaren We'll even be doing some live FB video broadcasts from on the road.

The event starts this Saturday, April 30, but we are currently on the road pre-running a couple of the tracks that are new to us. Unfortunately, we threw an engine fault code during testing at Summit Point yesterday and the car is now at McLaren of Philadelphia under the care of super-tech Kevin Hines and Service Manager Matt Gramling. They've been great to work with. Hopefully, nothing major (underboost - Bank One is the fault). Josh as also been super helpful in communicating the car's past service history.

NICE! I'm super looking forward to this! Good luck with your trip. Your'e going to have a great time. What rubber do you have on the car for the trip?

Awesome event - good luck against the Godzillas this year!

On another note, this is pretty hardcore from last year's event:

Final decision is based on the weather forecast. And we are restricted to 200tw street tires.

If no rain forecast for late in the week, we go with Plan A, which is Bridgestone RE-71R (235/35-19 and 285/35-19...yes 19). They are super quick in the dry, but will wear quickly throughout the week so likely not to have a lot of tread depth by the end of the week. If weather looks bad late in the week, we'll start instead on Michelin PSS in OE sizes. They are slower in the dry, but will last longer and be better in the wet late-week.

Since the event starts/end at Tire Rack, final fresh tires will be mounted there on Friday.

I was wondering how McLaren's warranty for track use would work for this? I know you have to get your car inspected before a track event but how would you interpret things for an event like this with seven track days and mileage in between.

Update on the engine fault...

Two related issues discovered...Bank One's wastegate actuator needs recalibration since it is opening too soon. But the other bank has a leak in the actuator's control signal so it is actually overboosting. Once the latter is fixed, the former recal can be done. Should be ready for pickup tomorrow.

Unfortunately, we can't really test the empirical performance since the fault only occurs when the conditions are met for somewhere north of ten seconds of full boost. Which gets you north of 150 MPH and locked up on the street.

If there is a dyno nearby, you might be able to hold 10+ secs of full throttle on the dyno. Just a thought about a "don't go to jail" way of possibly testing!

I was thinking the same thing.

Just got word that the repairs did not fix the problem. They were able to get the fault again on a test drive.

Halfway...old turbo out....this new one goes in now. Dump valve (aka BOV) is integral to the turbo and is the part nearest the palm shown here.

ETA is noon for work done, then test drive, then load up and go. Fingers crossed.

We're here in South Bend ready for the start. Wet skid pad today, then off to Pittrace for tomorrow.

Unfortunately, we were able to reproduce the engine fault during some street testing yesterday. At this point, we'll just drive around the problem. Dashcommand app on phone within reach to clear codes on track, and avoid full throttle for the really long straights at Summit and Road Anerica. Not optimal, but we are out of options.

Sorry to hear of your issues, AWH. It doesn't sound like anything I've heard of or has been mentioned on the forum before (probably something to do with the extra weight of all those stickers!)? Hopefully, as you say, you can drive around it and it doesn't compromise the event at all. Sounds like a great event, BTW, something I would love to do - should get organised for next year!!

Oh yeah, car looks absolutely awesome!

Best and welcome, F
