Can any one describe life, in an MP12, with exhaust induction removed?

No way. I didn't intend to buy a very fast, flat Rolls Royce.

I find it a little artificial and would be nice if it was switchable.
Up above the streets and houses. |

I may end up removing it, as well. But I want to wait until I've had the car on the track, while wearing a helmet. By far the best solution would be to have it switchable, so you could still set Powertrain to track on the street, without having the extra noise.

Agreed! I'm no fan of the artificial noise induction. It's like turning the radio on.

Where I'm coming from is :-
1. I prefer a natural sound finding it's way into the cabin. 2. On a long road trip does the induction become a 'noise' that gets on your tits. Natural engine sound is always an entertaining joy and helps with driving inputs. So it would be interesting to hear of what happens to the noise in the event of the pipe-work being blocked/removed.........I do wonder if it can be a software or fuse removal fix????? roundincircles Started with Scalextric Various 911's from 1991 MP12, Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200,BMW K1600 |

I asked McLaren whether this could be made a switchable feature accessed through Iris, they said they'll look into it but of course no promises were made, so in the interim I have had the plenum to cabin pipework removed / blocked in order to get rid of the artificial sound (McLaren Birmingham did this for me)
Fact is that induction roar is only a small part of the overall 'engine' sound - I want to hear the turbos spinning, the exhaust note and all the other mechanicals, not just a crass induction sound artificially piped into the cabin. You may as well be playing induction roar through the stereo!! Lose the pipework & associated valves, and save the weight. Life is far better without it and of course the car sounds 100% identical to those outside. No effect on warranty and the process is completely reversible too.

Should be a No-Charge Option, called "Harry Metcalfe Delete".

I'll run it by my dealer. They don't seem too keen at doing anything at "no charge".

No charge and so it should be as McLaren modified the sound after I and doubtless you ordered!

I took a look at the set up yesterday, whilst at the MPC, and it looks difficult to access.......or an excuse for 3 hours labour charge. I asked if a software fix was available but they did not know.

Reading through the Owner's Handbook (finally), I'm wondering if deleting the induction sound is even necessary?
The manual states that the Powertrain settings are only relevant when the gearbox is in Automatic mode. So, if driving in Manual mode (i.e. using the paddles), it would appear that the only change effected by switching Powertrain to Sport or Track is to increase the induction noise? Therefore, why not just leave the dial in Normal, while using the paddles. Unless I'm missing something. I thought that the Powertrain in Sport or Track would increase the sharpness of the shifts while in Manual mode, but I can't find any reference to that. |
