Default first MP4 detail, total surface protection

Hi all, this is my first post and just wanted to share with you this new car gtechniq detail i carried out at rybrook birmingham for a customer. First, my own personal opinion on the cars overall paint finish is very good, a few questions and answers from the factory.

2. are the cars painted by hand and are they using a ceramic clear
coat,

Yes the cars are painted by hand using refinish materials, no the cars are not finished in a ceramic clear (a ceramic clear will not give us the results we require from our flat and polishing process), it is a polyurethane acrylic clear with high gloss and very good paint performance properties.

3. will the cars be colour sanded to remove orange peel, or just
machined polished?

I do not recognise the colour sanded process, we will be machine flatting the upper surfaces of the vehicle to level the paint surface and then machine polishing to a high gloss.

4. what are extras steps to the more expensive paint
finish you are selling?” i.e is there any process difference from Standard, Special and Elite paints ?

The standard colours are a mix of solid and standard metallic colours.
The special colours are formulated with pearl and/ or Xirallic pigments which give off multi effect colours in direct sunlight.
The Elite range have specialised formulations which give of the most dramatic effects and colour vibrancy in direct sunlight, they are a mix of 2 stage and 3 stage paint processes.

Ok so onto the detail as mentioned DOS are going to coat the car in gtechniq crystal lacquer and glass coatings with a 5 year warrenty www.service.gtechniq.com, these coatings are originally from the super yacht sector to protect vunrable gel coat from harsh weather conditions, and tested in Qlabs a independant weathering station in the arizona desert.

This protection detail took 2 days around 20 hours work, a dark coloured car may take a little longer.

here are a few pics but you can see a full write up i did here. http://mclarendriver.com/node/31

All comment and questions welcome hope you like it. Drew................

Hi just a quick video update showing the hydrophbic affect and how easy it is to the clean and dry the car once the coating is applied.

If you used a water filter you could dry it off and leave it to a spot free shine!

More info soon on the new portable hot air dryers 80% quicker drying times will be around £100. Lovely bit of kit for your new car.

that looks pretty awesome, I have to say.

are there any disadvantages to having this? how often does it need to be re-applied?

also great to hear that the factory paint job is good quality. so many expensive brands are doing crappy paint these days, it's enough to drive you batty when spending that kind of dough!

There are no dissadvantages as it as it uses a covalent bond to the surface you are putting it on and reduces swirl marks by upto 80% with the right wash techniques you wont re-introduce as many cob webs. You can treat it in any way you wish after, some detailers put expensive waxes over the top to keep there sponsers happy. It does come with a 5 year warrenty which involves a gtech detailer checking the car and topping the coating up with C2 every 18 months.

application take around 2 days and as will need a light machine polish with water based P2 to prep the paint surface ready for the coating, these will out last any high end wax or polymer sealent and costs less than 1% of the price of the car and at a realistic price point.

see the link to ulysess a super yacht just been coated nd for sale for a cool $49m
http://www.fraseryachts.com/sale/sal...chtID=Y5544_FL

I went to prodrive last week to coat the mini WRC cars for rally spain the drivers love the coating http://twitpic.com/6zpn83

The factory finish is good and the lacquer they using very glossy. compared to Lambo and Ferrari its amazing, this is the finish in the new performante.

and Lexus LFA

this is a m5 i hand fltted, but this takes a lot of time to achieve and all done by hand over 90hours. (Robbie take note this is what i would like to do with the 458?)

I have another supernova silver booked in later this week ill keep you all posted on the detail.

My current is G:techniq coated and I have to say it does make keeping clean a doddle, particularly on the wheels when brake dust just jet-washes right off.

Two extra questions for the factory here I think:
1. Given McLaren's aims for total perfection and Mr Dennis' legendary attention to detail, it's suprising a brand new car left the factory with the imperfections you found (unless this is more common than I think across other manufacturers)
2. For less than a grand, what are the reasons that this level of finish/protection isn't being applied as standard?

In my opinion there is a notable improvement in the new factory and new light tunnels installed.

see link to mircle detail doing a freshly painted McLaren F1 showing the defects still left from the bodyshop not sure were this was painted, this detail would be in the region of £5,000 i reckon

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=232583

2) I am working with David Tibbetts at Birmingham and should be able to get this treatment added onto the car invoice so can pay all in 1 go and can coat the car ready for collection. ive just finished my 7th car for him.

http://wp.me/PopjL-1uC

Standard Silver
Sapphire Black
Special McLaren Orange
Special Graphite Grey
Elite Volcanic Red
Elite Pearl white
Elite Supernova silver

The factory has been interested but not sure they could do every car that leaves the factory due to the time constraints. Regarding the price point C1 is a quartz coating and will out last any other dealer coating so does work and i was trying to find a realistic price point for the customers and just extending the McLaren customer experience.

A few updates to show you this Jaguar XK8 which was coated 18months ago and as you can see a daily driver and well used its been around 4 weeks since ive last cleaned it i normally go back every 2-3 weeks to keep it looking its best.I just wanted to show you with these coatings and the right wash techniques how good the car lookes.

upon arrival

Why the 2 bucket technique is so important not to pass contaminantes in to the clean suds bucket.

After 4 hours all done just a few wash marks appearing but in great codition.

This was zippycar VO car i coated a few weeks ago, the car was machined polished with water based P2 polish then coated with Gtechniq C1 and all the glass, wheels, seats, plastics ,diffuser all protected.

The car looked so glossy it was amazing, i will be posting a video walk round of the car once ive uploaded and edited it.

follow link to full album of the car.

Hi Drew

It looks as if Rybrook is keeping you busy. Do you travel to service us down south from London or know of anyone who will do the same job to the same standard. You appear to building quite a reputation in Birmingham if they let you take photos of your detailed cars in the dealers showroom

The results look amazing

Hi Rybrook are keeping me in business at the moment very slow hard and up here but its getting there slowly, plenty of money but no care in there cars and appearance.

David Tibbetts at brum is a good guy and does not mind me taking pics but have to be careful as customers cars but no number plates showing and i just use them in my portfolio, and to update you owners on here.

ive had a few enquiries from down south and was trying to maybe do a 2 week trip starting in Bournemouth heading to Brighton then Kent and anywere in between

i think there is a detailer in London but not sure if he uses Gtechniq but uses a £24,000 pot of wax!

i love the cars and tried to build some technical knowledge as well about the cars all i need now is to visit the factory. it would be great to be know as a McLaren specialist.

Thanks for the update. Can the job be done to the same standard without your workshop and all those lights?
There are detailers down here but it's always better to use someone who is
recommended... I think there is one at the Top Gear track at Dunsfold but I don't know anyone who has used them.
As for £24K pot of wax, I will stick to Gtechniq
If you are coming south, just pm me ( Car due for delivery sometime in mid march )
