How did you get into McLaren's? What attracted you to the brand and the cars?

My uncle was Les Richter - he owned/operated Riverside Raceway (after his NFL Hall-of-Fame career with the LA Rams). In 1969 I was five, and my dad would often take me to CanAm races (among others) out at Riverside. Well, I remember "the orange car always wins" and "the Bruce and Denny Show." In fact, I remember overhearing someone say "you know we could all save a lot of time and hassle if we'd just decide now that McLaren was going to win - we could have a picnic!" My blood has been McLaren Orange sinced then.
I'm literally a car guy - at all and in every regard - because of them. Then there was the Senna/Prost era. Then the F1 dropped the 0-60 record from 4.5 to 3.2 - all at once (that'll never happen again!) and held the record for top speed for over a decade until the Veyron (yawn) barely edged it. My signature line says it all - for me - really. All you have to do is look under the skin of the 12C - it could be a defense satellite. Not counting the styling (which I love, but which I realize is a subjective thing) - the technical execution is nothing short of perfection. Little things like the A/C clutch are so astonishingly engineered - it's just so amazing and they've totally delivered beyond even my very jaded expectations. Because McLaren. |

I have over the years been invited to McLaren's Paddock Club. During these visits, i can see their dedication to being the best and winning. No other team in F1 has competed so consistently with Ferrari. Cannot afford the buy the F1 and it's also LHD. When i heard about the 12C, i had to have one.

Despite the driver sitting in the middle of the car some rate it as LHD because of the shifter placement being to the right of the driver, similar to what you find in a LHD car. Makes little sense to me, but I've heard that opinion several times over the years.

But when I'm driving the car - regardless if I'm flying down a canyon or just tootling along with traffic - it's just the best car ever. When I get back into anything else now it feels old, like I went back to cassette from a CD. The 12C is the Car of Tomorrow. And I mean compared to pretty much anything. The only car with a more comfortable ride is a Phantom. The only car that's faster hasn't been built yet (and it'll be a McLaren, too). I love that as I'm just cruising along in this very comfy, quiet car that's getting 25mpg and rocking the tunes on cruise control ("Dr. Jekyl" mode) - I could pretty much kill anything that's stock (and most of what isn't) - as long as it cost less than $1M (and/or the race is below 175mph) ("Mr. Hyde" mode). And if the road is twisty I don't care what you're driving. Because McLaren. |

Personally it is a result of the F1. That car has always fascinated me. I love the central seating position, the approach taken to its development, and the fact that it is the last true "road" car to win Le Mans.
