I went for a drive an hour or so at highway speeds. I live in the NE US, and have the winter tires on (by the way, I really, really like them - excellent traction in the cold). I noticed that my left rear tire was 15-20 degrees hotter than the other three tires, despite nearly identical tire pressures. Nothing got *too* hot mind you, but three tires at 80 degrees and this one at 100. It just seemed inexplicable and odd.
I don't know enough to determine if this is not a big deal, or something more important. So I figure a few of you on this forum could weigh in with your insights and wisdom. Thanks in advance.
First thing to do is verify that the TPMS sensors aren't lying to you. I assume you don't have a tire pyrometer, but you do have a tire pressure gauge, right? Use it to measure the pressures, preferably when the tires are up to temperature, and see whether they really are "nearly identical".
If 3 tires are nitrogen filled and one tire filled with air there could be significant water vapor present in the problem tire. As the water vapor reaches boil point there will be significant pressure changes. Most tire stores could fill your tire with nitrogen.
Happens in my car too. I've always assumed its related to ambient surrounding air from, e.g. Closer proximity of coolers on one side of the car versus the other. When you push it on the track the temps even up a lot so I don't think its sensor-related. I'm not worried about it, it's been like that for five years and several sets of tyres and wheel swaps
thanks for the update on the winter tires, have you used them a lot on snow and ice???
I use the Michelin tires, and have not tried snow or ice but I love them in the rain, they bite really well and I love out accelerating all autos from a stop and no wheel spin for the most part, I know just how much throttle to have FUN. Anyone tried these in snow and ice. I only encountered a little really light snow and ice in the Rockies last year when leaving steamboat Springs for Wyoming , not enough to make the ground white so I am curious.
