They may have wanted to install the older version until their stock ran out, then used the new design for the rest of the 17's. That means one thing then... they are likely plug and play and retrofit-able, and i'll likely be contacting the dealer to see how much it is to swap out for the new design. I am not a fan of the 3 screens to be honest.

Just dropped my dealer a note too to try and get an explanation on the three vs one screen.

I agree, I find the 3 part separation uncluttered and extremely diver intuitive.

I didn't mind it.... until I saw the one single screen.

I'm sure it's just plug and play since I highly doubt they want to be stocking two sets of displays in low volume for repairs, etc. I really doubt it would be worth the price to change it though. If it's the same as the P1 display though, maybe the P1 could be upgraded to the latest single display.

Perhaps the 570LT will get a different graphics style that makes use of a continuous display better than the 3 individual ones. The Audi virtual cockpit is super nice and definitely makes great use of it being one single display.

Yeah, and also my Tesla's single display is amazing- my 570s screen and graphics are so basic and lame compared to my Tesla. I also took a drive in the new Audi R8, and the gauge cluster is so nice compared to McLaren's. The single virtual cockpit screen was very nice and it really seemed like a huge leap above McLaren's offering. Since you get all your information on the cluster and look at it so much when driving, its a big difference and the one of the only things I like about the R8 over the 570.

Interesting that you liked the Audi R8 Gen2 Virtual Cockpit Single Display, because that is the very reason I chose NOT to trade my Gen1 R8 for a Gen2 and instead decided to buy a 570S!

I like having the NAV, Radio and Comfort features in a separate center mount display and detest having to peer through the steering wheel to read the Navigation system. Despite Audi’s claims that locating the NAV, Radio, Phone etc. in front of the driver is less distracting; I found the location extremely distracting by having to bend my head down and look through the steering wheel! I prefer to glance to my right to read a center mount system. I call HOG-WASH on Audi’s many claims that this consolidation was in the interest of safety. I contend that this was a pure and simple cost cutting decision made by Bean Counters.

If Audi was TRULY interested in a less distracting location, they would have provided a Head-up windshield display…but I suspect that the Bean Counters would have stroked out over the cost.
IMO, McLaren's current 570S display is hands down superior to the R8's Single Virtual Cockpit display...so I guess that we will just have to agree to disagree!

Jim,

I can see how someone would prefer the 570S version in the situation you described. I am glad you like it better than Audi's version! I do agree, a heads up display would be awesome- in both the R8 and 570S. In my C7 Corvette, I absolutely loved having that HUD. Kept my lead foot under control because the speedometer was always right there reminding me what a dumbass I was

I had a heads-up display on my (2015) Audi S6 and it was not that helpful. Polarized sunglasses made it all but disappear so it was useless in the Summer months unless I was driving at night.

Doubt it was cost related considering all the other cars with the virtual cockpit also have a center screen as well, some simple like this A4, and some that pop up out of the dash. The likely reason not to include a center console screen is that it's didn't flow with the rest of the design.

When you get a chance, please try out the rear view camera. Please let us know if it works in real time?

Jim
I just occurred to me that the real problem that is most likely being solved here is top down motoring with sun behind you for the eventual 570 Spider.
